Actor David Corenswet, famous for playing Superman, has disclosed an unanticipated third persona for his superhero character. Starting July 11, Corenswet will make his debut as DC’s main star in James Gunn’s “Superman,” replacing Henry Cavill and launching a revamped DC Universe. Although “Superman” marks the beginning of DC Studios’ new universe, it won’t follow a traditional origin story for the hero; instead, it focuses on Clark Kent after he has already established his dual identity.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Corenswet revealed that the latest DC film features a new character for him to portray – a blend of both Clark Kent and Superman. This character emerges when Clark is in the presence of someone who recognizes both aspects of his identity.
Additionally, there was another figure whose presence brought out a unique version of Clark. When he’s with someone who understands both his personas, he’s neither fully embodying Superman nor simply being Clark.
As a dedicated cinema enthusiast, I’d put it like this: In an intriguing revelation, Corenswet shared that the character of Clark Kent is reserved for only three individuals: Clark’s parents, Jonathan and Martha Kent (portrayed by Pruitt Taylor Vince and Neva Howell), and his girlfriend, Lois Lane (played by Rachel Brosnahan).
His true self is revealed only when he’s around his parents and Lois, particularly after she becomes well-acquainted with all aspects of him.
The persona of Clark Kent/Superman frequently varies. Clark is usually clumsy and kind-hearted, making it unlikely that anyone would suspect him of leading a secret superhero life. On the other hand, Superman embodies strength and serves as a beacon of hope and justice, rarely displaying emotions in public.
In his own words, Corenswet followed similar principles as he developed the character, yet he was thrilled to delve into this specific moment where those ideas hold the least relevance. Moreover, he looked forward to examining the character when he’s a blend of Superman and Clark Kent: a touch of superhero and a hint of the ordinary man.
In my viewpoint, I’ve always believed that Superman possesses an extraordinary ability to maintain his composure and conceal his emotions. However, what truly piqued my interest was when James mentioned these traits are indeed authentic about Superman. Yet, it’s intriguing how this story presents a scenario where those characteristics seem least applicable to him. It’s as if we’re witnessing a blend of both Superman and Clark Kent – the only other person in the room being privy to his true identity and holding all the aces.
In the upcoming movie, it appears that Superman’s character will merge his dual identities of Clark Kent and Superman into a single entity, as suggested by the teasers. The previews for the film reveal that Lois Lane and Clark Kent are in a relationship at the start, with Lois being privy to Clark’s secret identity as Superman. During a pretend interview, Superman’s usual reserved demeanor and hidden emotions seem to falter, suggesting a more personal connection. Furthermore, a touching moment between Clark and his father at their home indicates another situation where he can let go of both Clark and Superman personas, allowing him to be genuinely himself.
In Gunn’s “Superman” movie, the story revolves around Superman exploring his personal identity, as he navigates the intersection of his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent. The film offers fresh takes on classic DC characters such as Nicholas Hoult playing Lex Luthor and the Justice League members: Nathan Fillion portraying Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, and Edi Gathegi in the role of Mr. Terrific.
Who Else Will Know Superman’s True Identity?
To date, there are only three individuals who are aware that Clark Kent is Superman and vice versa: his parents and Lois Lane. This secret knowledge has the potential to create conflict and serves as a valuable plot device for the upcoming movie as well as the larger DC Universe.
If a villainous character such as Lex Luthor or one of Superman’s counterparts discovers his hidden identity, it could lead to major complications for the hero – similar to the predicament faced by Spider-Man in “Spider-Man: No Way Home”. However, revealing his secret to trusted individuals like Jimmy Olsen, a friend at the Daily Planet (portrayed by Skyler Gisondo), might provide advantages, allowing him to be assisted in maintaining normalcy throughout his daily life.
In many cases, it’s likely that superhero comrades might disclose their secret identities, implying that Superman may eventually unmask himself to the Justice League, assuming they become either partners or adversaries.
From a movie enthusiast’s perspective, let me add that there are other characters within the DC Universe to ponder, like Milly Alcock’s Supergirl. Being Superman’s cousin, Supergirl could potentially be another witness to his third identity. The question is when these two might cross paths on-screen, whether it will be in the upcoming ‘Superman’ film or perhaps in next year’s DC Universe movie titled ‘Supergirl’.
