David Dastmalchian Says He Hasn't Spoken With James Gunn About Returning to the DCU

As a devoted DC fan who has witnessed the evolution of the universe through various adaptations, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation when it comes to David Dastmalchian potentially reprising his role as Polka-Dot Man or taking on a new character in the upcoming DC Universe. The charm and energy that he brought to Abner Krill were unparalleled, making him an instant fan favorite among many of us.

In the realm of comic book adaptations, David Dastmalchian has made quite an impact, appearing in diverse projects such as “The Dark Knight,” the “Flash” TV series, and “Ant-Man” movies. For many DC enthusiasts, Dastmalchian’s standout role is Abner Krill / Polka-Dot Man, the popular villain who left a memorable mark on James Gunn’s 2021 film “The Suicide Squad.” Given that Gunn is now jointly managing DC Studios, speculation has arisen about whether Dastmalchian might play a role in the new DC Universe. Recently, there have been some hints regarding this. While discussing an upcoming Image Comics series titled “Knights Vs. Samurai,” Dastmalchian spoke about potential involvement with the DCU, suggesting he could reprise his Polka-Dot Man character or take on a new role altogether.

In our interview, Dastmalchian stated that he hasn’t discussed with James about his return, as they seldom get a chance to connect due to James’s extremely busy schedule, which is even busier than Todd McFarlane’s. When they do manage to connect, their talks are mostly personal matters. However, playing Abner Krill was one of the best roles in Dastmalchian’s career. He’s unsure about Abner’s existence post-events, but a potential story about Polka-Dot Man’s origin seems interesting. Nevertheless, he expressed his desire to work with James Gunn again, though he’s uncertain how or where this might happen. Working with James was an exceptional experience in Dastmalchian’s acting career.

What Is on the DC Universe Slate?

As a passionate fan, I’m thrilled to share the exciting lineup that DC Studios has planned! In 2025, we’ll witness the return of our beloved Superman, while in 2026, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will grace our screens. Additionally, movies like The Brave and the Bold, Swamp Thing, and The Authority are on the horizon, although their release dates are yet to be announced.

In 2023, Gunn clarified, “Many believe we’re replicating Marvel 2.0, but I learned plenty at Marvel, and there are significant differences. Our story is grand and epic, similar to Marvel, yet more carefully structured from the start because we have a team of writers shaping it entirely. However, we’re also developing a universe like Star Wars or Game of Thrones, with diverse settings, characters that aren’t just black and white, but complex.

Knights vs. Samurai #1 will be released wherever comics are sold on September 25th.
