As a movie buff with decades of film and television knowledge under my belt, I can certainly empathize with David Jason’s sentiments. It’s a peculiar sensation to be forever linked to one character, no matter how iconic it may be. In many ways, Del Boy Trotter is like an uninvited houseguest who refuses to leave, following him around like a shadow.

David Jason confessed that the iconic character Del Boy from Only Fools and Horses frequently lingers as a ghostly presence in his mind.

In a recent interview with the BBC, the actor openly discussed his most iconic role while promoting his upcoming memoir titled “This Time Next Year”. The book will be released for purchase both in physical bookstores and online via Amazon, starting from this coming Thursday.

Jason explained that the success of ‘Derek Trotter’ feels akin to a lingering spirit, similar to Scrooge in A Christmas Carol. It seems as though he’s always with me,” Jason said when asked about the continued relevance of the sitcom.

“He’s on my back all the time because wherever I go people recognise me as that character.”

He went on to admit that he is “upset slightly” that Del Boy appears to be “the only thing people remember me for”, citing various other successful projects he has starred in across a six-decade career.

Jason went on to say: “I’m thrilled that the character has touched so many lives and been appreciated, but sometimes it feels as if people overlook the various other projects I’ve worked on.

In addition to these, notable characters portrayed are Peter Barnes from the suspenseful piece “A Sharp Intake of Breath,” Pop Larkin from the delightful series “The Darling Buds of May,” and DI Jack Frost in the long-lasting ITV detective drama “A Touch of Frost.

Additionally, he portrayed Granville in both Open All Hours and its subsequent series, but the continuation of these shows remains uncertain due to their temporary halt during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Jason affirmed that he and his production team are all set and prepared to produce the intended finale, however, they’re keeping a watchful eye for news from the BBC regarding if the series will carry on.

As a film enthusiast, I’d say, “I can’t wait to reunite with the talented cast who made filming such an enjoyable experience.

During the interview with Jason, it was disclosed that one of his biggest professional regrets was not having ever become a part of the National Theatre. As a young aspiring actor, he had always dreamed about performing in grand productions alongside renowned actors. However, now he expresses concern that his memory might not be strong enough to handle such a role.

Only Fools and Horses is available to stream on ITVX Premium.
