According to David Mitchell, the unexpectedly huge popularity of his detective series left him utterly amazed.
This year, the actor was present at the TopMob Covers Event, a gathering honoring television personalities gracing the cover of a well-established magazine over the years. At this occasion, he took time to ponder over the successful premiere of the series.
In this comedy-drama, Mitchell portrays John ‘Ludwig’ Taylor, a character who sets out on a quest to discover the fate of his long-lost twin brother. To do so, he takes on the job of a detective chief inspector with the Cambridge Police Department and delves into his brother’s life.
Working together with her sister-in-law Lucy (portrayed by Anna Maxwell Martin), they aim to reveal the mystery behind James Taylor’s unexpected vanishing. Having a keen interest in puzzles, Ludwig proves to be a valuable resource in their investigation.
As a passionate cinephile, I shared with TopMob my astonishment: “I’ve always yearned for success like this, but to be honest, nothing I’ve ever created has struck a chord with the audience as swiftly as this.
I’ve accomplished things I’m extremely proud of, yet it seemed as though my actions were similar to what television shows were back in the ’80s; they played, and by the end of the week, everyone found out about them.
Instead of being a stark contrast, let’s say it mirrors an interesting twist with Mitchell’s enduring Channel 4 sitcom, Peep Show on Channel 4 – a series that managed to fend off numerous cancellation threats, even though it consistently received praise from critics.
The panelist on Would I Lie to You? commented, “I can’t explain [why it became so popular], but I won’t take credit for it. It’s exceptionally well-crafted, and there seems to be a demand for such shows.

I believe they handled it quite effectively, aired it during a season when viewers were eagerly anticipating such content, and I hope it lived up to expectations as the desired type of program, catering to audience preferences at that moment.
Last October, it was announced that Ludwig would be returning for another season due to its success as BBC’s largest new scripted series since 2022. The corporation’s Director of Comedy, Jon Petrie, attributed this achievement to a combination of skilled British comedic performers, an engaging mystery, and meticulously designed crime narratives.
Mitchell commented: “The fanbase for this is certainly distinct from Peep Show. What stands out is their genuine excitement and sheer enjoyment – that’s why we create television shows.
