Fans are well-acquainted with David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor in “Doctor Who,” but a surprising revelation has come up during his podcast that he almost declined the role due to advice from his former agent. In an episode of “David Tennant Does a Podcast With…”, the actor shared that he nearly turned down the part of the Tenth Doctor because of guidance received from his agent at the time: “Just two days after they offered it, I needed to think about what it entailed. My previous representative advised me not to get involved, stating ‘It’s not going to succeed.’
As a die-hard Whovian, I can still vividly recall the moment when Christopher Eccleston vacated the iconic role of The Doctor, leaving Rose Tyler (Billie Piper) utterly stunned as she bore witness to the groundbreaking first regeneration from the contemporary series version. The charismatic David Tennant then stepped into the TARDIS and led us through three thrilling seasons, along with several captivating television specials that further enriched the Time Lord’s tale. Alas, he was eventually succeeded by Matt Smith, who would later shine in “House of the Dragon.”
Many devoted fans, myself included, yearned for the return of the Tenth Doctor, who has since been acclaimed as The Doctor’s most beloved incarnation in numerous fan surveys. Our hearts leaped with joy when Tennant graciously reprised his role in the 2013 Doctor Who 50th anniversary special, leaving us all grinning from ear to ear!
David Tennant almost missed out an incredible Doctor Who legacy
The second comeback of Tennant in “Doctor Who” came as an even greater shock. Following Disney+’s acquisition of the international distribution rights for “Doctor Who”, Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor underwent a regeneration, transforming into a fresh portrayal of the Doctor by Tennant. The plot hinted that the Time Lord had to recall something crucial, explaining why his form returned with a familiar visage. In truth, Tennant was thrilled to resume the role, and “Doctor Who” fans were elated to welcome back one of their beloved characters on screen once more.
David Tennant’s Fourteenth Doctor will soon part ways from the character portrayed by Ncuti Gatwa, who has been leading “Doctor Who” for over a year now and will reprise the role in the upcoming new season. The breakout star of “Sex Education,” Gatwa, has brought a infectious optimism to his interpretation of the Doctor. As the character continues to develop through Gatwa’s performance, it’s intriguing to reflect on how Tennant nearly declined the role years ago. Staying in the TARDIS ultimately shaped Tennant’s career and personal life (including meeting his wife, Georgia Tennant, while working together on a “Doctor Who” episode). It remains to be seen how Gatwa’s tenure as the Doctor will impact his future career path.
Apart from his role in ‘Doctor Who’, David Tennant has made appearances in the ‘Harry Potter’ series and Amazon Prime Video’s adaptation of ‘Good Omens’. In the Wizarding World, Tennant played Barty Crouch Jr., a character derived from the popular book series. In ‘Good Omens’, Tennant captivated many as the character Crowley, but his portrayal of the Doctor is arguably what he’s most renowned for. Fans can appreciate that Tennant ignored his agent’s advice when considering joining the cast of ‘Doctor Who’.
The new season of Doctor Who premieres on Disney+ on April 12.
