David Tennant opens up on intense role in The Hack: “It’s one of the stories of our time”

David Tennant discusses his upcoming ITV1 show “The Hack,” a drama centered around phone hacking, set to air in late 2025.

The previously announced seven-part series is set to feature David Tennant playing the role of investigative journalist Nick Davies. Robert Carlyle will portray retired Metropolitan Police detective chief superintendent Dave Cook, while Toby Jones takes on the character of former editor-in-chief of The Guardian, Alan Rusbridger.

During his interview on the most recent episode of the Off Menu podcast, featuring James Acaster and Ed Gamble, Tennant expressed that filming the series was a particularly demanding experience.

He explained: “Just because there’s a lot of quite complicated information in that, you know.

In this role, I am portraying a journalist who uncovered significant details in a complex case. The information is quite intricate and requires precise delivery due to the close scrutiny of legal professionals to ensure accuracy.

He commented: “The filming session was extended and rather intense. Yet, when you engage in such an activity, there’s a sense of pride in being involved. It’s one of those narratives from our era that deserves to be shared.

In January, some initial visuals from the series were revealed, while recently, ITV Studios’ global distribution head Ruth Bery stated that this upcoming show could be the equivalent drama to Mr. Bates versus The Post Office in 2021. (Or)

Some early images of the series were shown in January, and last month, ITV Studios’ head of global distribution, Ruth Berry, suggested that the show would serve as a modern-day counterpart to the Mr. Bates vs The Post Office drama in 2021.

As a movie enthusiast, I can share that “The Hack” was masterfully written by the renowned and accolade-winning screenwriter Jack Thorne. The plot synopsis goes like this: Spanning from 2002 to 2012, the gripping tale artfully combines two true stories. On one side, it portrays investigative journalist Nick Davies, brilliantly played by David Tennant, who unearthed evidence of phone hacking at the News of the World. Simultaneously, it follows the investigation into the still-unsolved murder of private investigator Daniel Morgan, led by former Met Police detective chief superintendent Dave Cook, brought to life on screen by Robert Carlyle.

Additionally, the cast features Rose Leslie playing Miss Austen, Dougray Scott portraying Crime, Eve Myles as Torchwood, Adrian Lester in Hustle, Katherine Kelly from Protection, Kevin Doyle of Line of Duty, Neil Maskell known for Hijack, and Lara Pulver, famous for Spooks.
