With each new Doctor donning the Doctor Who shoes, they all bring a unique style – and this uniqueness is reflected in their distinctive attire.
Many fans who enjoy Doctor Who associate a suit and Converse shoes with the character portrayed by David Tennant, the Doctor. Interestingly, the actor himself has disclosed the origin of this distinctive wardrobe choice.
In the most recent installment of the Off Menu podcast hosted by Ed Gamble and James Acaster, Tennant shared that his concept originated directly from Jamie Oliver.
He shared with the hosts, “The inspiration for my suit comes from Jamie Oliver; he wore a suit with sneakers on Parkinson, and it looked incredibly stylish. However, I didn’t exactly copy the suit, but his unique style was the source of my idea.
However, numerous suggestions were tossed about to refine the Tenth Doctor’s appearance, as Tennant shared that there were countless discussions on how the Doctor should be styled.
The Doctor who’s no stranger to gazes is Ncuti Gatwa, as the Fifteenth Doctor sports a distinct outfit in every single episode.
Some aspects of Gatwa’s appearance encompassed a style reminiscent of Bridgerton, a holiday motif, and memorable plaid patterns.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gatwa mentioned that when discussing the costume design, he had saved pictures of outfits from Ralph Lauren’s partnership with Morehouse and Spelman Colleges. At first, he envisioned his Doctor character wearing a single outfit.
He said, “That was the single costume concept I came up with, as I planned on wearing just one costume.
Upon entering and presenting my work, their reaction was one of delight, saying, “This is charming! What more do you have to share?” To which, I responded, “Oh,” expressing my surprise and pleasure.
In a statement, Gatwa mentioned that costume designer Pam Downe spread various designs on the table, showcasing kilts, skirts, and garments that challenged both gender norms and societal expectations.
“And I was like, ‘Yes, let’s do all of them.'”
Gatwa further explained: “The series embodies the essence of what’s distinctively British, and it possesses the ability to mirror societal changes in Britain.
I mused, ‘Exploring the various subcultures that have existed in Britain from the past until present, by examining their clothing styles, seems incredibly intriguing.’
