David Tennant takes the reins in first poster for Jilly Cooper’s Rivals

As a dedicated fan of David Tennant‘s extraordinary acting journey, I am absolutely thrilled about his latest role in “Rivals”! The man can do no wrong, and this time, he takes us back to the ’80s, a period that seems like a different era altogether.

In the latest promotional material for the upcoming Disney+ series “Rivals,” David Tennant assumes the spotlight. This highly anticipated show is based on a popular novel written by Jilly Cooper and boasts an impressive ensemble of talented actors.

In the vibrant setting of the 1980s English high society, known for its theatrics, extravagance, and scandalous behavior, the series “Rivals” immerses us in the cutthroat realm of independent television, specifically in the year 1986.

In the role of Tony Baddingham, a media executive, resides beside the charismatic yet womanizing politician Rupert Campbell-Black MP (previously seen in The Boys, portrayed by Alex Hassell). Their relationship is marked by a deep-seated animosity.

In the poster (above), Hassell’s former Olympian-turned-politician is depicted scowling on the right side, opposite Tony, while Aidan Turner is noticeable on the left as Declan O’Hara, a TV host and journalist who finds himself in the middle of their ongoing dispute.

To the left, you’ll find Nafessa Williams (from I Wanna Dance with Somebody), portraying Cameron Cook, an American TV executive producing Declan’s show. On the right, we have Bella Maclean, playing Declan’s daughter, Taggie.

The poster mirrors a thrilling preview and additional scenes from the show, featuring Tennant as Tony Baddingham, dressed in hunting gear on his expansive property (depicted below). This setup hints that it might be another impactful performance for the acclaimed actor.

Regarding the project, the star mentioned, “Since it was penned in the ’80s, it feels like I’m acting in a historical drama set during that era.”

“The focus is on the historical context, as you explore this book that deals with sexual politics. While some aspects may seem unexpected by today’s standards, viewing it within the framework of a period piece makes it intriguing…it offers a touch of the provocative.”

In addition to Idris Elba, the actors in this production are Katherine Parkinson, Emily Atack, Catriona Chandler, Danny Dyer, Rufus Jones, Lisa McGrillis, Luke Pasqualino, Claire Rushbrook, and Victoria Smurfit.

Ahead of the show’s premiere on Disney Plus this fall, you can catch a sneak peek at Parkinson’s portrayal of Lizzie Vereker, a romantic novelist who seems to be experiencing a shortage of romance in her own life.

Rivals is coming to Disney Plus in autumn 2024. Sign up to Disney Plus from £4.99 a month.
