As a seasoned cinephile who has traversed the labyrinth of cinema and television for decades, I must say that the upcoming adaptation of Dame Jilly Cooper’s Rivals on Disney Plus has piqued my curiosity and sparked an exhilarating sense of anticipation. The novel’s tantalizing blend of power struggles, sex, scandal, and controversy is a potent cocktail that I cannot resist.
I’m excited to share that come October, a fresh Disney Plus rendition of Dame Jilly Cooper’s Rivals will grace our screens, promising all the scandalous charm reminiscent of the original novel.
The second installment of the author’s Rutshire Chronicles is a book that explores the ruthless realm of independent television in 1986. It narrates a fierce rivalry between television executive Tony Baddingham (previously known for his role as Doctor Who) and politician Rupert Campbell-Black (a familiar face from The Boys). This story is filled with sex, scandals, and plenty of controversy.
If Tennant’s latest remarks are an indication, it seems that the upcoming Disney Plus adaptation will follow a similar pattern.
This morning (on Friday, 20th September), I had the pleasure of joining Zoe Ball on her Breakfast Show, alongside the remarkable Jodie Whittaker. During our chat, we were asked about the upcoming adaptation, and Scott Mills commented on Cooper’s novel, saying it has a bit of spice to it: “It’s quite racy.
Tennant responded: “It’s a little racy, sure.”
Next, Mills unfurled a chart depicting the human body structure and indicated the visible components in the show.
David showed a picture of human anatomy and questioned, “Does this resemble any human?” The actor then inquired, “Is it you, or is it someone else’s image being depicted?
After Mills made clear he was referring to “any human”, Tennant replied, “Go ahead and move that rule of yours, Scott. Swing it freely.
In 2022, Disney Plus revealed plans to bring the story of Rivals to life on screen, sparking curiosity among fans as to how the book’s themes would resonate with today’s audiences.
Previously, Dominic Treadwell-Collins, who is both a writer and an executive producer, commented about the series during an interview with The Times. He stated that when it comes to nudity, the show has been fair and inclusive, with male body parts appearing as frequently as female ones.
He added: “Jilly comes across as fluffy and lovely – but she’s got a steely eye when it comes to the sexism, the homophobia, the racism, class.”
I’m fortunate to be part of a star-studded cast alongside Tennant and Hassell. Aidan Turner, Nafessa Williams, Katherine Parkinson, Emily Atack, Catriona Chandler, Danny Dyer, Rufus Jones, Lisa McGrillis, Luke Pasqualino, Claire Rushbrook, and Victoria Smurfit are also part of this remarkable ensemble.
On October 18th, 2024, the much-anticipated series “Rivals” will be available on Disney Plus. Why not subscribe to Disney Plus today at just £4.99 a month, or save with an annual plan for £79.90?
