David Tennant was thrilled to reunite with Doctor Who star on Rivals: ‘It was heaven’

As a seasoned movie enthusiast with a penchant for British dramas and a soft spot for nostalgia, I must say that the upcoming adaptation of Jilly Cooper’s Rivals has piqued my interest significantly. The prospect of seeing David Tennant, a beloved figure from my youth as the Doctor, reprising his on-screen relationship with Claire Rushbrook, who played the unforgettable Ida Scott in Doctor Who, is an absolute delight for this old Whovian.

In this star-studded production, David Tennant assumes the main role, portraying one of the primary antagonists, Lord Tony Baddingham, and has the pleasure of working alongside another cast member from his “Doctor Who” days.

In the forthcoming drama, it is revealed that Claire Rushbrook, known for portraying Ida Scott in seasons 2’s The Impossible Planet and The Satan Pit, will take on the role of Tenant’s screen spouse, Lady Monica Baddingham.

Tennant recently opened up about what it was like to work together again, saying it was “heaven”.

He added: “And to have that husband and wife relationship. When she embodied Monica, there was no doubt of exactly who that woman was.

She’s absolutely stunning and has a unique charm that makes her stand out. She’s not only kind and amusing but also has a wicked, hilarious sense of humor. Among all the days spent working, I particularly cherish the ‘Mr and Mrs Baddingham’ days.

Besides lauding his previous Doctor Who co-star, Tennant, he also paid tribute to the expansive ensemble, remarking: “It’s quite rare to have a central cast of 15 key roles, all played by exceptional actors, incredibly unique, exceptionally specific, superbly chosen. They seamlessly slipped into these characters.

As a cinephile, I found myself in the midst of an extraordinary era where each character seemed to breathe life on their own. They were an eclectic group, making every moment spent with them a delightful adventure. This period, unlike any other, was brimming with unique joy.

The protagonist’s character will clash with the Conservative MP Rupert Campbell-Black, portrayed by Alex Hassell, in a developing conflict, all set against the ruthless landscape of the 1980s television business.

Aidan Turner, known for his role in Poldark, will also appear, portraying Declan O’Hara – a TV presenter who becomes entangled in the conflict. Meanwhile, Taggie, played by Bella MacLean, is the one who captures Rupert’s attention as Declan’s daughter.

The movie “Rivals” is set to premiere on Disney+ on October 18, 2024. Consider subscribing to Disney+ now at just £4.99 per month or save with an annual subscription of £79.90.
