It’s been made clear by David Tennant himself that he doesn’t foresee a return to Doctor Who anytime soon, if ever.
The well-respected actor shared his thoughts with Deadline during an interview on the red carpet at the 2025 BAFTA Television Awards hosted by P&O Cruises. He told the press that the program, which has been ongoing for sixty years, continues to thrive without any signs of slowing down.
He mentioned, “What truly enlivens this series is its continuous reinvention and discovery of novel storytelling methods. From what I know, they are currently continuing this without my involvement for some time.
As a die-hard movie enthusiast, let me set the record straight regarding those whispers about my potential comeback. Rest assured, if there’s any truth to it, I won’t keep you in the dark!
Indeed, David Tennant initially portrayed the Tenth Doctor during an exceptionally praised three-season span from 2005 to 2010. Since then, he has appeared in some notable comebacks – with his latest being for three special episodes celebrating the show’s 60th anniversary in 2023.

During those particular episodes, he portrayed a new manifestation of the Time Lord, known as the Fourteenth Doctor. This character was part of a groundbreaking development – the first-ever bi-generational storyline. Instead of going through a conventional regeneration, his character split into two entities.
Towards the finale of the series, the Fourteenth Doctor seemed to receive a conclusion that appeared final – and last year, during an interview with TopMob magazine, Tennant hinted that this could be his last appearance in the role.
The Doctor appears cheerful. He’s currently in Chiswick’s garden where Bonnie Langford is preparing mac and cheese for him! That’s what he mentioned.
The door hasn’t opened up any more than it has before, as in Doctor Who, there are numerous methods to revive someone. So, this appears to be the final chapter of our tale.
So it looks like fans shouldn’t count on seeing Tennant back in the TARDIS any time soon…
The TV show, “Doctor Who,” will resume next Saturday (17th May). In the UK, fresh episodes can be accessed from 8am on Saturdays on BBC iPlayer, with rebroadcasts following later that day on BBC One. For viewers outside of the UK, the series is available on Disney+.
