You wouldn’t want to miss discovering the “Dawson’s Creek” actor who was recently unmasked on “The Masked Singer.
One of the star actors from the cherished ’90s/’00s WB drama series was revealed to be Griffin in the March 19th episode of the Fox singing contest.
The actor hinted at a growing fondness for country music during an interview during the Group B Finals’ Grand Ole Opry-themed performances, stating, “You might not realize it, but I have a deep admiration for country music these days. It turns out that after spending so many years in the limelight, I relocated my family to the countryside. We desired a peaceful environment surrounded by nature, and this is exactly what we’ve found – it’s been ideal for my family and me.
After that, the television personality opened up about his personal history with emotional wellness, which preceded his participation on the reality program.
In my world as a lifestyle guide, I must share some transformative news that has significantly reshaped my perspective. This year, undeniably, has been a rollercoaster ride of emotions. Yet, amidst the turbulence, I’ve found solace and strength within the four walls of my home. My companions have been an unwavering source of joy on those challenging days, and they’ve stood tall when I momentarily faltered. Truly, I couldn’t have navigated this journey without their presence by my side.
“They stood beside me through it all,” he concluded. “They’re my safe space, my home.”
Just prior to delivering a heartfelt rendition of “Take Me Home, Country Roads” originally by John Denver, Griffin hinted at his performance with a final clue: the state of Texas. He elaborated, “The Lone Star state was instrumental in my rise to stardom.
Regrettably, Griffin ended up at the bottom of the night during a Battle Royale duet with Boogie Woogie, singing “I Had Some Help” by Post Malone and Morgan Wallen. However, in the end, it was Griffin who got eliminated from the competition.
Prior to being revealed, judge Robin Thicke had speculated that Kyle Chandler was his pick from the TV show “Friday Night Lights”, whereas Ken Jeong selected Josh Hartnett and Jenny McCarthy opted for Chad Michael Murray.
However, it was solely Casey Wilson, standing in for Rita Ora, who accurately identified the famous figure concealed within the bird costume.
As a devoted fan, I must say that despite Griffin’s voice sounding unmistakably masculine, it wasn’t Katie Holmes or Michelle Williams who were under the mask. So, the question remains: Was it James Van Der Beek or Joshua Jackson? The answer is quite intriguing – it was none other than our very own Dawson, Mr. Van Der Beek.
From an early age, I’ve had a deep passion for singing,” the 48-year-old explained. “I dreamed of being a singer, envisioning myself performing on Broadway with little recognition beyond New York City. However, at the tender age of 20, I stumbled upon fame as a teen idol.
James, residing in Texas currently, shared that he’s never had the chance to sing before. He attributed his newfound courage to explore his musical talents to his six children – Olivia (14), Joshua (13), Annabel (11), Emilia (8), Gwendolyn (6), and Jeremiah (3) – for their constant encouragement.
Nick Cannon playfully remarked, “Why not share this wonderful moment face-to-face instead?” as he presented James’ kids on stage, emphasizing, “This is truly a special occasion!
Indubitably, it was a significant event for the Van Der Beek family. Notably, James announced in November 2024 that he had been diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer the previous year. Since making his personal struggle public, the actor has been working towards recovery, bolstered by the unwavering support of his loved ones.
James shared with TopMob News last December that he’s doing well. He feels good and strong, and is currently in a positive state of mind.

The Masked Singer airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. on Fox.
On the debut night, the comical figure known for his adhesive charm and sweet demeanor, later identified as famous comedian Cedric the Entertainer, was eliminated.
It turned out that the lush greenery wasn’t just a plant, but boxing icon Oscar De La Hoya, who was knocked out on Shrek Night.
The songstress under the bug mask turned out to be former Danity Kane member Aubrey O’Day.
Bat was none other than Vanderpump Rules‘ one-hit wonder Scheana Shay.
The hip-hop icon behind the other-worldly costume was Flavor Flav.
In a surprising twist, the bird-like role was actually played by James Van Der Beek, famously known for his part in Dawson’s Creek, who was knocked out during the Group B Championship round.
