Fans of the PlayStation 5 are puzzled by the revelation that Bend Studio had been developing a live-service game, only for it to be scrapped following a company assessment.
Approximately a year ago, an employment opportunity arose at a well-recognized company based in Oregon, primarily recognized for their projects such as Days Gone and the Syphon Filter franchise. This company was seeking an experienced Lead Project Manager specializing in “triple A live service games”.
Yet, Bend Studio stands as one of Sony’s longstanding first-party developers, distinguished not only by the addition of multiplayer features across numerous titles but primarily by its exceptional single-player campaigns.
The upcoming project was characterized as their most impressive endeavor to date, and as a new era for Bend Studio. They hinted at continuing the foundation laid by Days Gone, leading us to expect an open-world game.
Well, it seems like we’ve got some adjustments ahead. Sony’s not shutting us down, but they’re going to be right there with us, helping us decide which games we’ll focus on in the future. Let’s roll up our sleeves and get ready for a strategic shift!
In response to all the excitement, community manager Kevin McAllister expressed gratitude for the affection and encouragement shown by fans, assuring them that they are still committed to developing interesting and innovative content.
The extent of what can potentially be saved from the project remains uncertain. Given that contemporary video games typically require at least five years for development, it’s likely we won’t see Bend Studio’s next game until approximately 2030.
Given that Days Gone was initially released in 2019, it’s entirely plausible that we might wait another ten years for a new game from the same team. There have been whispers about a remastered version of the biker game, but that may not be enough to satisfy PlayStation’s ever-hungry fanbase.
If current circumstances persist, there might not be many new PlayStation 5 exclusive games coming out aside from those that have already been unveiled.
