Days Gone Director Speaks Out Against the Game's Representation in Astro Bot

As a longtime PlayStation enthusiast with a special place in my heart for the gritty post-apocalyptic world of Days Gone, I find myself torn by this recent turn of events. On one hand, it’s delightful to see the expansive universe of PlayStation games showcased in Astro Bot, a testament to the rich history and creativity that Sony has fostered over the years. However, as someone who followed the tumultuous journey of Days Gone from its inception to its controversial ending, I can’t help but feel a pang of sympathy for John Garvin, the game’s director.

The creator of the open-world game “Days Gone,” which was popular during the PlayStation 4 era, has voiced his disapproval about the title being included in Team Asobi’s “Astro Bot.” Launched last week, “Astro Bot” showcases appearances and tributes to a variety of PlayStation games from the company’s past. This includes both newer franchises like Horizon and older series such as Ape Escape. In “Astro Bot,” many PlayStation games and their characters are highlighted. Although “Days Gone” is one game that made an appearance in the game, the creative director of the project has shared his disappointment over this crossover event.

Through a string of posts on his X account, Days Gone director John Garvin expressed his disappointment at witnessing the evolution of the franchise in Astro Bot. Garvin, who is no longer affiliated with Bend Studio, criticized his former team for exploiting Deacon St. John, the main character from Days Gone, to promote a seemingly minor game. He further stated that this decision fails to uphold the reputation of Bend Studio and relegates Deacon to nothing more than a caricatured salesman.

It’s clear that Garvin is feeling frustrated because his connection with PlayStation has come to an unfortunate end, particularly since their plans for a Days Gone sequel were rejected by higher-ups at Sony, despite his and other team members’ efforts at Bend Studio. Consequently, this decision might have led to Garvin leaving Bend Studio and perhaps signaled the possible demise of the Days Gone franchise. Therefore, it’s understandable that he may find it difficult to watch PlayStation promote Days Gone in any way, given their previous stance against a potential sequel.

Although Garvin strongly disapproves of Days Gone being portrayed this way, the team at Bend Studio appears to have a different perspective. Specifically, Kevin McAllister, who is currently the community manager at Bend, expressed appreciation towards Team Asobi for incorporating Deacon St. John in their platforming game. McAllister spoke on behalf of the entire team at Bend Studio and stated that they are “extremely proud” to see the franchise presented in this way.

McAllister gushed about “Astro Bot“, calling it a “masterwork” filled with smart design, creativity, and a polish that brings him immense pleasure. He also expressed gratitude towards Team Asobi for incorporating “Days Gone” into their game. Our team feels incredibly privileged, he added. McAllister encourages everyone to give it a try and send his regards to Deacon for him.
