Days Gone Director Upset at Protagonist’s Inclusion in Astro Bot

Days Gone Director Upset at Protagonist’s Inclusion in Astro Bot

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but chuckle at the ongoing drama surrounding John Garvin and his latest Twitter tirade. It seems that the creative director behind Days Gone has taken issue with Deacon St. John’s appearance in Astro Bot, a game celebrating the rich history of PlayStation.

John Garvin, the creative director for Days Gone, has been known for his outspoken opinions since he left SIE Bend Studio in 2020. Now, he’s criticizing Astro Bot, Sony’s newly released platformer. Known as a tribute to PlayStation with widespread praise, Astro Bot is filled with appearances and hidden references from various first- and third-party franchises that are linked to the PlayStation brand. However, Garvin seems displeased with one specific interpretation.

In a surprising twist, the main character from Days Gone, Deacon St. John, makes an appearance in Astro Bot, albeit in a robotic form like all other characters. This development doesn’t sit well with Garvin, who voiced his displeasure on Twitter. He also took a dig at SIE Bend Studio, the developer of Days Gone, saying, “It’s a bit sad to see Deek being used to promote other games. Well done, Bend Studio! You certainly know how to preserve your legacy!

In response to the user labeling his comments as harsh, Garvin wrote, “It seems like my character is being caricatured as a simple salesperson for a minor game, and that’s why I might appear harsh?

In recent times, Garvin’s remarks about Astro Bot have added to a series of situations where the creative director of Days Gone has stirred up debate through his statements.

Apart from being hailed as the top-rated game of 2024, Astro Bot appears to be making strong strides in terms of sales, with all copies selling out on Amazon Japan.

In our assessment of the game, we bestowed it with a 9 out of 10, remarking, “Stro Bot is a delightful tribute to everything PlayStation and an outstanding platformer in its own merit. If you’re a PS5 owner, this game is a must-play.” To read the complete review, click here.

Astro Bot can be found on the PlayStation 5 console. The creative minds at Team Asobi are actively developing additional content for free, which might feature appearances from games like Assassin’s Creed, Rayman, Stellar Blade, and others – hinted by the game’s closing credits.

It’s a bit disappointing to see Deek advertising other games instead, but great job by Bend Studio for safeguarding their reputation and legacy!

Laughing, it seems like my character is being portrayed as a caricature endorsing a trivial game. Am I coming across as too critical? Let’s keep the conversation mature, shall we?
