Initially, when it was announced that Days Gone would be remastered, numerous enthusiasts found themselves scrutinizing closely to discern the variations between the impressive initial PlayStation 4 edition and its upgraded PlayStation 5 version.
Now that the game is easily accessible, and our review giving it an 8 out of 10 as the “ultimate edition of a beloved title,” we’re starting to delve into some substantial technical analysis.
According to Digital Foundry, the resolution upgrade isn’t merely a basic upscaling as some expected; instead, they say that “considerable work” has been put into it by the technical experts.

A significant and noticeable modification involves the introduction of a completely different rendering system for lighting, significantly transforming the game’s appearance. From certain comparisons, it appears that the game now has a darker, more atmospheric, and remarkably lifelike visual style.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve got to say that the aesthetic appeal of the original Days Gone is unquestionable, but for me, it occasionally felt a tad one-dimensional visually. However, the lighting adjustments in this updated version really catch my eye and add an extra layer of depth that I find appealing.
As anticipated, performance primarily remains at around 60 frames per second, with occasional hiccups. However, Bend Studio plans to introduce a 40fps mode along with Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) as updates in the near future.
Initially, one might think that this remaster is unnecessary, but upon closer look, it seems quite valuable. When you take into account the extensive upgrades to the lighting and the introduction of the brand-new Horde Assault mode (a feature that could make the $10 upgrade worthwhile for those who have already completed the campaign), this looks like another impressive remastering project from Sony.
