Lady Shiva stands as one of Batman’s deadliest adversaries, renowned for her exceptional combat skills. Some believe she’s unparalleled, though others argue that she has been defeated by the top two fighters enough times to cast doubt on that claim. Regardless, she is the most lethal assassin alive, having been chosen to train the League of Shadows, an elite group led by Ra’s al Ghul. From birth, Lady Shiva was destined to be a formidable fighter; however, in her final battle against the Unburied, she sacrificed her life to protect her daughter. Although Shiva is no longer alive, her death has granted Batgirl something she never had during her lifetime: the truth about her true identity.
In issue #7 of Batgirl, the “Book of Shiva” storyline kicks off, living up to its claim as a groundbreaking new chapter for the assassin character. Following her demise, Shiva sent a book and recording to her daughter, Cassandra Cain, who is embarking on an enigmatic journey to confront the relentless Unburied and uncover her family’s ties to them. This captivating tale offers a rich emotional experience, exhilarating action sequences, and long-awaited insights into DC Comics’ formidable fighter.
Where Did Lady Shiva Come From?
As a devoted admirer, I can share that my earliest recollections are filled with the constant fleeing of my parents and dear older sibling. There was always the sense of being pursued, though we were unaware of who or what was chasing us. Yet, amidst all the turmoil, my parents’ undying affection for their children stood out as a beacon of hope. The pain intensified when the enigmatic assassins’ guild, known as the Blood, tracked us down and took the lives of my beloved parents.
Shiva and her sister fled, eventually seeking refuge in a secluded mountain village. They grew up in a temple, honing their martial arts skills from an early age. However, the malevolent Blood had a foothold in the village, and when they stood up for an elderly woman against a Blood enforcer’s extortion attempt, they unwittingly exposed their hidden heritage. The powerful Blood retaliated, claiming many lives of those dear to them in the village, with the leader revealing himself as Shiva and her sister’s paternal uncle, who had been involved in a forbidden romance. He attempted to recruit them, but they declined and once more fled into the wilderness. As the story progressed, Shiva cautioned Cassandra that her life would never be the same after crossing paths with David Cain, Cassandra’s biological father.
This Isn’t Rewriting Shiva’s Origin, It’s Expanding On It
In earlier tales, Lady Shiva’s backstory was hinted at, revealing her intimate bond with her sister that deepened into an intense admiration, bordering on an almost perilous obsession in this particular narrative. As the story goes, David Cain persuaded Shiva to aid him in crafting his deadliest assassin, promising to liberate her from her constraints. In essence, he extinguished her family, leaving Shiva bereft of a tether to the goodness within her soul. With no one left to hold her accountable, she succumbed to the darkness residing within and lived solely for herself. Cain granted her a form of freedom, and in return, she birthed him a child.
In “The Book of Shiva,” we can expect Cain’s arrival to profoundly affect Shiva, causing a transformation from her deep-seated affection to a destructive rage, and ultimately, despair upon her sister’s demise. Given Shiva’s unwavering loyalty towards her sister, this impending event is certain to reveal the complexities of Shiva’s emotions, providing an insightful exploration of her character. Earlier in the story, Shiva herself hinted that her sister possessed all her tender feelings, which were later bestowed upon Cassandra. This arc promises a captivating examination of Shiva’s character development.
In essence, this narrative didn’t merely delve into the past events, but also shed light on current situations. We got a glimpse into the troubled history of the Blood of Wu, their struggle to transform from a notorious group of assassins. Furthermore, we learned about Shiva’s connection to this group, explaining why they were ready to aid her when the Unburied threatened her. Interestingly, it was revealed that the elderly woman the Blood enforcer attacked was secretly dealing the healing blue flower of the Unburied, explaining their motivation for retaliation against the Blood. This suggests that the blue warriors weren’t as hidden as they had led us to believe. It seems likely that Shiva didn’t just uncover the existence of the Unburied, but they have been intertwined in her life all along, suggesting a destiny for both Shiva and Batgirl to confront these adversaries.
Regardless of whatever comes up subsequently, I’m certain that I will undoubtedly grab the next issue to get a detailed insight into how Shiva transformed from an eluding girl to an authentic villain. If you’re a Lady Shiva enthusiast or simply appreciate thrilling comic book action, this is a spectacle you shouldn’t skip.
