The iconic character Superman is experiencing a revival, with the approaching “Superman” movie marking a significant push by DC Comics towards Superman-themed books. The year 2025 summer promises to be the Summer of Superman, leaving super fans elated. Superman can sometimes be hard to capture effectively, but recent comic releases have been exceptional. Additionally, Supergirl is returning with a new series, suggesting that DC may be planning to reintroduce other classic elements from the Superman titles. In “Action Comics” #1087, readers are taken back to the formative years of Clark Kent, as he and the Kents visit Metropolis for a new space museum. Unfortunately, a villain attack prompts young Clark to step up as Superboy, indicating that we can expect to revisit Clark Kent’s teenage Superboy adventures, which is an exciting development.
Over the years, the time when Superman was known as Superboy has been debated in DC’s continuity multiple times. The publishing company eliminated this period initially during the “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” then reintroduced it following “Infinite Crisis,” and scrapped it again with the New 52 reboot. Since then, DC has made numerous changes to its universe (I’m a fan of DC, but it seems they enjoy resetting everything), leaving the status of Superboy in DC history uncertain. However, the latest edition of “Action Comics,” penned by Mark Waid, a writer who is passionate about every aspect of Superman’s history, revisits this topic and that’s something to be excited about!
Superboy Opens Up So Many Story Options
Kick things off by discussing an intriguing aspect: The reemergence of Superboy and his connection to the Legion of Superheroes. Superboy significantly impacted the Legion of Superheroes in multiple ways. This team, a collection of superpowered alien teenage superheroes, was motivated by seeing Superboy use his powers to save Earth. This realization gave them hope that they could make an impact in the universe, thereby uniting them. Eventually, they traveled back in time to recruit Superboy.
The Legion is one of DC Comics’ most complex teams due to the alterations caused by their reboots. Reintroducing Superboy into continuity leaves only self-imposed limitations for DC to either reboot or restore the original pre-“Crisis” history of the Legion (which they have done once post-“Infinite Crisis”, but was marred by the New 52).
In “DC All-In” #1, DC has introduced a new rendition of the Legion known as the Darkseid Legion. From what we’ve seen so far, they appear to be evil counterparts of the classic Legion. However, this could also mean that the original Legion still exists, thanks to Superboy being brought back to life.

The upcoming segment featuring Superboy’s return promises an intriguing element: the dynamic between young Clark Kent and Lex Luthor. Their early friendship turned into enmity during their childhood, which laid the foundation for their animosity in later years. Initially, Lex was a supporter of Superboy, but he turned against him after a failed science experiment left Lex injured. This rekindled rivalry could spark some captivating narratives, and it might even breathe new life into the Superman/Lex Luthor feud. Moreover, Superboy’s comeback could pave the way for numerous engaging tales. Although it’s unlikely DC will launch a dedicated Superboy comic right away, they can certainly publish stories featuring Superboy in action, illustrating his progression as a hero. Modern DC storylines are gradually aligning with pre-Crisis DC, and Superboy plays a crucial role in this transition. Once upon a time, Superboy was an integral part of DC’s history, and he can reclaim that position once more.
The Return of Superboy Is the Best Idea DC Has Had In a While
In Action Comics #1087, Superboy encounters a tough time due to the emergence of a new adversary named Raze. This situation provides an intriguing twist, revealing an aspect of Superboy that’s quite fascinating. It offers writers an opportunity to delve into how Superman evolved into the iconic figure we know today. Since Superboy was learning the ins and outs of heroism, his presence enables creators to portray a less-than-perfect side of Superman – one that makes mistakes – offering readers a fresh perspective on the character’s development. Reintroducing Superboy is an excellent move, as it adds depth and richness to the character’s history.
One major issue with DC’s reboots has been their tendency to eliminate elements of their history for the sake of simplicity or making the stories more accessible to new readers. However, removing anything from established lore is a misstep. DC’s reboots have eliminated many beloved aspects for fans, and Superboy is one such victim. Superboy plays a crucial role in the Superman legend, and his return presents a wealth of possibilities. Here’s to Superboy!
