DC Kills Two-Face in New Batman: The Long Halloween Comic

As a seasoned gamer and comic book enthusiast with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that the latest installment of Batman: The Long Halloween saga has left me on the edge of my seat! The suspenseful cliffhanger at the end of issue #1 has me questioning whether Two-Face’s “death” is truly the end for one of Batman’s most iconic villains.

In this week’s release, we see Batman’s longtime nemesis meet their end – or so it seems. The new limited series titled “Batman: The Long Halloween – The Last Halloween” is the concluding part of a trilogy that delves into Batman’s early years, and the ongoing string of murders that have entangled him with Gotham’s criminal underworld and emerging rogues gallery. Previous tales by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale, “Batman: The Long Halloween” and “Batman: Dark Victory“, left numerous conflicts unresolved – some of these lingering grudges have now escalated into deadly confrontations in “The Last Halloween”!

WARNING: SPOILERS FOLLOW

Batman: The Long Halloween’s Final Night – The Last Halloween #1 (written by Jeph Loeb, illustrated by Eduardo Risso) presents an intricate web of attempted killings on Halloween night, involving Batman and Robin (Dick Grayson). Catwoman is gunned down while escaping Falcone’s penthouse, with the Dynamic Duo in hot pursuit; Commissioner Gordon experiences a chilling ordeal as his son James gets kidnapped while they are out trick-or-treating. The villains aren’t spared either: Two-Face and his bodyguard Solomon Grundy suffer an attack in their subterranean hideout by three masked assailants, all clad in clown costumes. Two-Face receives two bullets from a .22 pistol with a duct-taped handle – the same weapon linked to the notorious Holiday Killer.

Under his clown disguise, the leader of the group reveals himself (although we don’t catch a glimpse of his face). He declares that he has come to communicate with Harvey Dent’s wife, Gilda – one of the criminals who adopted the Holiday Killer alias during The Long Halloween. This new clown masked villain seems well-aware of Gilda’s hidden truth and is bold enough to approach her through her husband, intending to confront her directly.

Is Two-Face REALLY Dead?

Eduardo Risso’s illustrations leave no room for doubt that Two-Face receives a bullet in the Harvey Dent side of his head, which makes him appear dead in Gilda’s embrace. But remember, we’re discussing Two-Face here, and given the sequence of events throughout the Long Halloween Trilogy, it seems likely that he will somehow survive to continue haunting Batman as one of his formidable adversaries.

This “surprising death” might be another clever red herring in the comic book genre, considering several possibilities: A .22 caliber pistol is relatively weak, making it possible for Two-Face to survive a bullet to the head. Since the villain has previously survived gunshots from The Joker and a significant fall, two gunshot wounds could seem almost trivial in comparison.

Another possibility is that Two-Face’s shooting has a storyline role. It might turn out in “The Last Halloween” that the part of “Harvey Dent” which survived was killed by the gunshot to his non-criminal side; when he recovers, only “Two-Face” could remain.

Batman: The Long Halloween – The Last Halloween #1 is now on sale at DC.
