In the latest installment of Absolute Superman (issue #6), we delve deeper into the origin story of Kal-El as he lands on Earth and encounters Smallville. This chapter might just tug at your heartstrings, so brace yourself for a dose of emotion. As Krypton meets its tragic end, the tender care of Martha and Jonathan Kent offers a glimmer of hope to the young Kal-El. However, change is imminent, and the events in Smallville could significantly shape Superman’s journey ahead. Proceed with caution if you haven’t read Absolute Superman #6 yet, as spoilers lie ahead!
After 8 months of hunting for habitable planets, Sol eventually finds one right here on Earth. However, upon his initial contact with Earth’s sun that shines yellow, Kal-El is left in a near comatose condition. But it was Martha and Jonathan Kent who stumbled upon him and graciously welcomed him into their home after he had a fateful landing.
The Kents closely monitor Kal as he struggles to adjust to his newly discovered abilities. At times, Kal hovers in the air and nearly ignites the surroundings while residing there, but Martha remains unfazed, disregarding initial concerns raised by Jonathan. To her, Kal is a wonder, and this belief only strengthens when he eventually regains consciousness.
Following this, Martha and Jonathan assume caregiving roles for Kal, a position he hadn’t experienced in a while. This connection grows even stronger when Sol revives and assists Kal in expressing himself. In a heartfelt moment, both Jonathan and Martha share with Kal the profound impact his presence has had on them personally and in their relationship with each other. This revelation makes the events that follow even more poignant and tragic.
Following Sol’s destruction of Lazarus’ weather-controlling drones, which were strategically placed to pressure the Kents into selling their land to the corporation, a local informant reports Kal to Lazarus. Citing immigration policies, a squad of Peacemakers arrives and attempts to detain Kal. Sol intervenes, but when Jonathan tries to reason with the Peacemakers, they retaliate by striking him in the face with their weapons.
In a sad turn of events, Martha and Jonathan urge Kal to depart and leave immediately, while Sol informs Kal that he cannot be arrested. Recognizing his course of action, Kal ascends into the heavens, abandoning the home he believed was his permanent refuge.
Here’s another way of expressing the text: There’s an additional twist in this tale. While Kal is coming back to Smallville now, it isn’t just him who has moved there. As the issue concludes, we discover that Martha is residing in a retirement home and her health is being discussed. It turns out she needs memory care, which paves the way for an intriguing exchange between her and Lois Lane – a conversation that fans will eagerly await in upcoming issues.
In Absolute Superman #1, we only caught a fleeting glance of Martha, lying in bed with a cherished photograph of herself, her beloved son Kal-El, and her husband Jonathan on the farm. This Kal is indeed her miracle, and though moments may pass when she forgets, she still vividly recalls their family’s bond. I eagerly anticipate unraveling the mystery of Martha’s journey post-Kal’s departure, discovering what befell dear Jonathan, and delving deeper into her life in this intriguing continuation.
