In the comic “Absolute Superman,” significant alterations have been made to the traditional origin story of Superman, particularly focusing on Kal-El’s time on Krypton. The events leading up to Krypton’s destruction, which is depicted in “Absolute Superman” #5, mark a conclusion to this period. There are several notable differences from the original tale that undeniably leave a profound impact on the storyline. Be advised, spoilers for “Absolute Superman” #5 follow, so read at your own risk if you haven’t yet perused the issue.
Previously, the El family disclosed to the public that Krypton was about to be annihilated, having discovered earlier from the Science League that the planet’s demise had already been foreseen. What made matters worse was their knowledge of the League’s plan to evacuate only the privileged, condemning the rest to perish. In issue #5, we delve into the turmoil caused by this disclosure, and as one might expect, it leads to widespread disorder.
The Science Guild has condemned the El family to execution for leaking news, dispatched special forces to their residence. To escape, they must battle through to their spaceship. However, an unexpected twist unfolds: They’ve amassed a group of fellow Kryptonians aboard the ship with plans to depart the planet, deviating from the initial narrative.
In the initial scenario, Jor-El and Lara-El could only send Kal-El off in a vessel. However, we witness a modified scenario later on, where a significantly larger spaceship is attempting to leave the planet. Unfortunately, a fragment of the deteriorating planet collides with this ship, causing it to disintegrate into numerous independent pods, one of which contains Jor-El and Lara-El as they navigate through the debris in their own compact spacecrafts.
In this adaptation, unlike the original tale where Jor-El’s warnings fell on deaf ears, here the Science League had been secretly preparing a plan to evacuate their people. They were constructing a fleet of spaceships to transport them away from the planet. However, once the truth about the impending doom of the planet was disclosed, the citizens of Kandor rose in rebellion. Caught between their uprising and the planet’s destruction, none of the evacuation ships managed to escape off the planet.
At the end, only Kal-El’s spaceship appears to have reached space, yet there’s a good possibility that another ship managed to escape or was found later, even though this isn’t depicted. For now, Kal-El is the last known son of Krypton, but his unique experiences on the planet and advanced age when he departs will significantly influence him in the future, given the distinct circumstances surrounding his departure.
