DC Reveals Superman Will Lose an Eye…But When?

DC Reveals Superman Will Lose an Eye…But When?

As a seasoned gamer of the DC Universe, I must admit that the latest turn of events has left me utterly stunned. The life of Superman, a character I have followed since his infancy, has been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride. But this recent twist with Doomsday and Time Trapper has taken it to a whole new level of insanity!

Over the last few months, things have been quite tumultuous or extremely hectic, and it seems like Superman’s life has taken another unexpected turn just in the past week. This is largely due to Time Trapper, who also happens to be the one responsible for Clark’s previous death, known as Doomsday. In Superman #20, this incarnation of Doomsday provides some mysterious hints about surviving this predicament, while simultaneously making some significant disclosures regarding Superman. Among these revelations is the loss of his eye at the hands of an old adversary.

As a devoted admirer, allow me to paint the scene for you: For millennia, Doomsday was engineered as the ultimate annihilator, leaving no world unscathed in his wake. With each destruction, he adapted, ensuring that the next encounter wouldn’t end the same way. And then, in a clash of legends, I witnessed him confronting the final Kryptonian, a battle etched into history.

Following his resurrection, he encountered numerous rebirths and deaths spanning countless millennia, but this pattern shifted dramatically after his confrontation with The Legion of Infinite Realms. They managed to end his life, and although he reappeared among the living once more, he has since ceased evolving following that clash. If he perishes again, he anticipates being reborn as a deity, thereby ending the cycle and enabling him to create rather than destroy.

Reaching this particular point in time, he acknowledges he came earlier than planned. At this juncture, he informs Superman, “You’ve kept your right eye intact, implying Zod hasn’t returned yet.” This implies that Superman will likely encounter his old adversary again, and Zod is no stranger to causing grievous harm to Superman. If events unfold as expected, Superman may soon be seen with an eyepatch, but that’s not the only trouble brewing for Clark.

Time Trapper then remarks, “However, I recall this significant moment in the past…the arrival of my former self…The dread that follows. Lives taken. You’re about to face trials beyond anything you’ve experienced before. Yet, you shall persevere, as you always do. Unfortunately, not all your comrades will share your fate.

Superman rushes towards Time Trapper, but he’s swiftly sent off to one side. Then, Time Trapper delivers a warning, “The next time we cross paths, you will decide to aid me, or witness everyone dear to you meet their end. To demonstrate a superior future lies in our collaboration, I grant you an early advantage for your upcoming confrontation with my past self. Keep in mind, every second counts.

If we’re up against someone similar to Zod, Superman might sustain severe injuries, but it isn’t Zod that the Time Trapper hinted would harm Clark’s loved ones. Sadly, Clark discovers later in the comic book who he was talking about, as Parasite is gruesomely torn apart by the rampaging Doomsday, and this is just the start of a conflict that might claim more lives before it ends.

What are your thoughts on that comic book topic, and do you believe we might encounter eyepatch Superman in the near future? Feel free to discuss comics and DC with me on Threads, Twitter (@mattaguilarcb), or Bluesky (@knightofoa)!
