Currently, there’s a lot going on in the DC Universe, and it takes quite a bit to cause utter chaos, particularly when it comes to the Justice League. However, Justice League Unlimited #5 manages to stand out as it not only unmasked the deadly adversary Inferno, but this revelation also sent ripples through numerous other stories in the DC Universe, leaving us with countless questions. Be advised, spoilers for Justice League Unlimited #5 are forthcoming, so if you haven’t read the issue yet, consider yourself warned.
Initially, the League was tasked with safeguarding the G20 Summit taking place in Australia. However, unexpectedly, the entire summit was instantaneously transported to a different dimension. This situation would have been challenging enough, but this particular dimension is home to ferocious creatures. In response, the League immediately leaps into action.
The incident leads to a worldwide economic standstill as countries scramble to identify culprits, given their leaders have mysteriously disappeared. This occurs amidst multiple coordinated attacks, leaving the League disorganized. Mister Terrific is currently working on unmasking Inferno to trace the origin of these events.
It seems at first like the Legion of Doom has resurfaced, as Inferno calls them ancient adversaries. However, there’s an issue with that assumption: Terrific checks through their team members and finds that everyone in the group is accounted for, using Lex’s memories, Sinestro’s recent reemergence as a Green Lantern, and the last known location of Joker.
It turns out at the summit that one of the world leaders was actually an Inferno plant; when everyone is safely back at the Watchtower, the planet is identified as Gorilla Grodd’s. Grodd manages to flee thanks to AirWave’s assistance, and in doing so, reveals his covert agent status to the League. However, it’s the final revelation on the last page that leaves everyone stunned.
It’s revealed that Grodd is returned to his original hideout – formerly known as the Legion of Doom headquarters. Interestingly, it’s disclosed that the Legion of Doom has been active under a different name, Inferno, all along. The lineup consists of familiar faces such as Grodd, Scarecrow, Sinestro, Joker, Bizarro, Black Manta, Captain Cold, and Lex Luthor. Now, we’re left wondering about their recent activities.
Is this the Legion of Doom as we know it, or perhaps a different reality’s version, given the discrepancies observed among Superman, Batman, and Green Lantern? These inconsistencies have led to some confusion, particularly regarding Luthor, following the revelations in Superman issue 24.
After the incident at House of Brainiac, Luthor lost his memories, and although he’s regaining some, they’re not yet fully restored. In Superman #24, Lex was arrested, meaning this version of him isn’t currently around, and the versions of Luthor here and in that story don’t match up. This Luthor also doesn’t appear to be the new Superman wearing black armor from the end of the issue. So, is this a familiar Luthor or an entirely different character?
Just as with Joker and Sinestro, it’s worth noting that both characters have undergone changes since the relaunch of their respective series. Sinestro, formerly a member of the Green Lantern Corps, has returned to his old ways and now wields fear-inducing powers once more, despite not having access to these abilities during the corps’ relaunch. As for Joker, he’s currently in a dire situation, being tortured by Hush within the Batman series, but it’s quite unexpected to see him fully recovered and joining this team.
Well, folks, it’s clear there are many mysteries to unravel here, and the text at the bottom of this final panel seems to suggest we’re peering into the past. It hints that “The time-tossed terror” in this comic book panel starts with Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #38, marking the beginning of the “We Are Yesterday” event. As a devoted cinema-goer turned comic book enthusiast, I can hardly wait to see where this intriguing time-travel tale unfolds!
