DC Studios’ Comic-Con Plans Leave Fans Disappointed with Just One Project

Every July, the San Diego Comic-Con offers an annual tradition filled with delight for pop culture enthusiasts. Since the mid-2000s to the late-2010s, it has also evolved into a grand stage for major movie news and trailer debuts. Inside the revered Hall H (a must-visit location at the convention), studios like Marvel Studios, Warner Bros., Lucasfilm, Legendary Pictures, and numerous others have unveiled significant moments that left ordinary fans eager for what’s to come. For example, it was here that the title of “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice” was first announced, and the premiere of the first “Iron Man” trailer ignited excitement worldwide.

Over the past few years, I’ve noticed a shift in how movies and TV studios approach events like Comic-Con. Instead of saving all their big announcements for this event, they’re gradually spreading them out throughout the year. This change is partly because some high-profile films, such as “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” and “Brigsby Bear,” failed to deliver despite hefty investments in Comic-Con presence. The pandemic has further disrupted the entertainment industry, making it even less viable to rely on one major event like Comic-Con for all the big reveals. Additionally, as franchises like Marvel Cinematic Universe reduce their output, there’s simply less new content to share at these events. This trend is evident in DC Studios’ decision to only present one project at the 2025 Comic-Con, which I’m sure will leave many fans disappointed but hopefully excited about what’s to come!

What DC Studios Title Will Appear At Comic-Con?

2025’s San Diego Comic-Con is set for July 24-27. Although Superman, which premieres on July 11, won’t be part of this event, DC Studios co-head James Gunn has revealed that they will only present Peacemaker season two at the gathering. A panel featuring Gunn and Cena will focus solely on this HBO Max series. However, Gunn has also hinted that he might discuss any upcoming projects from DC Studios during the same panel.

As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that my favorite series, Peacemaker, is back for its second season in August 2025, hot on the heels of SDCC 2025. It’s only natural for me to eagerly anticipate these upcoming eight hours of DC Studios content. However, it’s hard not to feel a tinge of disappointment when I realize that one of the first DC Studios panels at SDCC won’t be as stacked with projects as a typical Marvel Studios panel.

Back in 2019, for instance, when Kevin Feige and his team graced us with their presence, they unveiled a flurry of Phase Four projects for both the big and small screen. They also announced a reboot of Blade, which we’re still waiting to see materialize. So here’s hoping that DC Studios will surprise us just as much!

At San Diego Comic-Con 2025, Gunn’s DC Studios is choosing a more compact approach for the time being, as they don’t have much fresh content to reveal at this stage. The production of “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” wrapped up in June 2026 and is currently undergoing post-production, so there isn’t much footage available to share. The only other DC Studios movie with a confirmed release date after 2025, “Clayface,” won’t start filming until October 2025. Mentioning the TV show “Lanterns” might draw attention away from the upcoming season of “Peacemaker.

It appears Gunn and his team are working diligently to preserve the unique charm of their upcoming HBO Max program, as rushing to announce multiple projects prematurely often compromises other series. By having a more streamlined SDCC 2025 panel, DC Studios can steer clear of that pitfall.

The DC Universe’s Future Is Still In Flux

Despite DC Studios’ SDCC 2025 schedule appearing thin, it may spark some discontent among DC enthusiasts due to its representation of the uncertain state of the franchise until the release of Superman. With the Sgt. Rock movie temporarily on hold, Supergirl is the only DC Universe film in production following Superman, apart from James Gunn’s directorial project, that has yet to hit theaters. The upcoming Clayface film and other projects beyond the 2026 title are still shrouded in mystery.

I find myself wondering if Gunn and other DC Studios leaders are treading cautiously, waiting to gauge the public’s reaction towards Superman. With all the buzz surrounding this blockbuster, there’s a chance it might not live up to expectations financially or critically. If that happens, Warner Bros. could find themselves in a familiar predicament from their mid-2010s days, where they have numerous DC blockbusters lined up, but the audience seems less than enthusiastic about the characters. Given this, it’s not surprising to see them putting more emphasis on the upcoming Peacemaker follow-up, a project that can thrive independently from Superman.

It makes sense that they’re taking a measured approach to avoid overwhelming the DC Universe. Yet, it might disappoint long-time fans who have been eagerly waiting for projects like “The Authority” or “The Brave and the Bold,” as progress has been slow since Gunn first announced Phase One projects years ago. A panel at SDCC 2025 solely dedicated to “Peacemaker” Season 2 could further fuel those feelings of frustration. In the meantime, fans can be patient and look forward to the friendly banter between Gunn and Cena at the upcoming SDCC 20225 panel.

Peacemaker’s second season begins airing on HBO Max on August 21st.
