Currently, Peter Safran shares co-head responsibilities at DC Studios with James Gunn, shaping the DC Universe. Yet, his role might change significantly, as he’s rumored to potentially take charge of Warner Bros. Pictures. According to a report by Puck, the turbulent leadership of Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy (who oversaw costly projects) at Warner Bros. could be replaced, with Safran being a strong contender for the position. However, it seems that there’s a lot of uncertainty as it’s also suggested that Zaslav may launch a search for new leadership instead of promoting from within.
As of now, it’s undecided what lies ahead for De Luca and Abdy at Warner Bros. Robert Gibbs, spokesperson for Zaslav, clarified to Puck that there is no basis to the rumor about any backstage alterations at the studio.
In 2022, Gunn and Safran took on their roles at DC Studios, followed by an array of movie and TV series announcements. This summer marks the debut of the first theatrical film set within the DC Universe, directed by none other than Gunn himself. Safran, with a rich history in production, has been involved in significant projects such as multiple entries in the DC Extended Universe and the Conjuring series throughout his career.
In their attempt to launch the DC Universe successfully, Warner Bros is facing some challenges. The movie “Joker: Folie à Deux” was a notorious, Razzie-winning flop at the box office. Although director Bong Joon-ho’s “Mickey 17” received good reviews, it managed to earn just $19 million domestically in its debut weekend – a significant issue given that the sci-fi film cost $118 million to produce. According to reports from The Puck, there are also worries that other high-budget films on Warner Bros’ schedule (like Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” and Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another”) may not generate enough box office revenue to cover their substantial production costs.
It’s quite unusual to consider removing Safran from DC Studios at this point. He and Gunn are still refining the lineup for the DC Universe, with some projects temporarily paused. Since the DC Universe is crucial for Warner Bros.’ future plans, it might be wiser to keep Safran in his current position rather than subjecting the franchise to a significant change so early on. If Safran were to take over Warner Bros. Pictures as a whole, he wouldn’t have the close working relationship with Gunn that he currently does. Adding another voice to the mix could potentially cause more instability in the DC Universe’s schedule.
If the circumstances had been different and the DC Universe was already a profitable venture for Warner Bros., perhaps Safran would have had a more straightforward route to take on another role. Considering De Luca and Abdy are likely leaving soon, Zaslav might choose to observe how Superman performs before making his decision. If Gunn’s reboot is well-received and the DC Universe improves, Safran could climb up the ladder. On the other hand, if Superman underperforms, Warner Bros. might consider hiring someone from outside to help get their cinematic lineup back on track. It will be intriguing to see how things develop in the future.
