DC Studios' James Gunn Drops Surprising Martian Manhunter Tease

As a lifelong DC fanatic who’s seen more continuity crises than I care to remember, the news about James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe slate has me grinning ear to ear like a Cheshire Cat on Chocos overload. The prospect of a new era for the DCU is as exciting as seeing Superman and Batman sharing a milkshake (a moment I’ve been waiting for since the dawn of time).

The DC Universe’s live-action realm is venturing into unexplored territories with James Gunn and Peter Safran’s upcoming lineup of films and series. Several projects are progressing, such as the debut of Creature Commandos on Max by year’s end, Gunn’s Superman film finishing production, and the ongoing production of season 2 of Peacemaker. A hint about the world-building for this new phase has been revealed thanks to a recent post from Gunn on social media. On Friday, he responded on Threads to a fan’s request for comic-accurate moments in the DCU, suggesting J’onn J’onnz / Martian Manhunter‘s affection for Chocos cookies might be incorporated into live-action projects. He posted an image of real Chocos cookie packaging, implying that these cookies could feature in a DC project beyond their appearance in Superman‘s set photos. Gunn later shared the same Chocos packaging on Instagram and Twitter.

Wow, @dcofficial is bursting with captivating tales! I can hardly contain my excitement to witness some of these instances (and countless others like them) unfold on both large and small screens. Many thanks for this entertaining thread, @captain_mohando.

What Are Chocos?

In the DC Universe, Chocos serve as an alternate version of Oreo cookies, a treat that first appeared during the run of Justice League International by Keith Giffen, J.M. DeMatteis, and Kevin Maguire. A humorous recurring element in these early issues was that Billy Batson/Captain Marvel would eat Oreos and drink milk during team meetings, which Martian Manhunter soon imitated. This cookie-eating habit became a significant aspect of J’onn’s character, often seen consuming them excessively in various appearances. By 2000, the Martian Manhunter series, penned by John Ostrander, Doug Mahnke, and Patrick Gleason, changed the name of Oreos to Chocos to avoid copyright issues with their parent company, Nabisco. In issue #24 of Martian Manhunter, it was revealed that J’onn’s Martian physiology is negatively impacted when he experiences withdrawals from these cookies.

At the moment, it’s not clear how Gunn’s real-life Chocos package might fit into the DC Universe, given that the character of Martian Manhunter hasn’t been officially cast in the franchise yet. However, it’s plausible to envision a character in either the next season of Superman or Peacemaker casually consuming these cookies as a subtle nod to the in-story items within the new DC Universe, before Martian Manhunter makes his onscreen debut.

What Is on the DC Universe Slate?

According to Gunn and Safran’s revelation from January 2023, the first lineup of movies by DC Studios will feature “Superman” set for release in 2025, followed by “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” in 2026. Other films on the roster include “The Brave and the Bold”, “Swamp Thing”, and “The Authority”, all with unspecified release dates. In addition to these movies, there will be TV shows on HBO Max such as “Waller”, “Booster Gold”, “Lanterns”, “Paradise Lost”, and an animated “Creature Commandos” series. There are also reports suggesting that a live-action “Teen Titans” movie and an animated “Jurassic League” movie might be in development at DC Studios, although neither have been officially confirmed yet.

In 2023, Gunn clarified that while many assume it will be similar to Marvel 2.0, he emphasized significant differences. He noted that they were developing a comprehensive central story, much like Marvel, but with a more structured approach from the outset because they have a team of writers working on the plot. Additionally, Gunn described their creation as having elements reminiscent of both Star Wars, with its diverse settings and timelines, and Game of Thrones, due to its morally complex characters.
