As a seasoned gamer with years of comic book-inspired video games under my belt, the upcoming James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe is like a dream come true! The anticipation for both the “Creature Commandos” animated series and Gunn’s “Superman” movie has been building up like an epic boss battle, and I can hardly contain my excitement.
The DC Universe created by James Gunn and Peter Safran is coming into view, with the debut of the “Creature Commandos” animated series set for December, followed by Gunn’s “Superman” movie next summer. These projects mark the beginning of a new DC Studios era, offering hints about the potential scope of the franchise moving forward.
More recently on Threads, Gunn mentioned that he and Safran have been working on merchandising for the DC Universe. In response to a fan’s enthusiasm about Superman Funko Pop! figures, Gunn shared his own excitement by saying, “I feel the same way too. By the way, I can’t help but mention my fondness for Creature Commando funkos, which might just be my all-time favorites.”
Who Are DC’s Creature Commandos?
The Creature Commandos are a team of beings that are half-human, half-monster, who perform government missions in military operations. For the TV show adaptation, we’ll see characters like Eric Frankenstein (David Harbour), Bride of Frankenstein (Indira Varma), Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo), Dr. Nina Mazursky (Zo? Chao), Doctor Phosphorus (Alan Tudyk), G.I. Robot (Sean Gunn), and Weasel (also played by Sean Gunn). Additionally, the series will feature Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, and Steve Agee as John Economos.
“Gunn revealed that the ‘Creature Commandos’ series is inspired by a renowned team from DC Comics. The unique aspect of our DC Universe is the seamless integration of animation with live-action. This means that television shows, movies, and video games all share the same universe. We plan to use actors who can portray these characters not just in this series but also in other projects, some of which we’ve already cast. I, James Gunn, have penned all seven episodes of the show and it’s currently being produced.”
What Is Superman About?
According to DC Studios, the story of Superman follows Clark Kent’s journey from Smallville, Kansas, where he grew up as a human, to reconciling his Kryptonian roots. He stands for truth, justice, and a brighter future, embodying these ideals with compassion in a world that often views kindness as outdated.
In addition to Superman, the cast includes Rachel Brosnahan portraying Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult stepping into the role of Lex Luthor, Skyler Gisondo playing Jimmy Olsen, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Terence Rosemore as Otis, Mara Gabriela de Faría as Angela Spica / The Engineer, Isabela Merced taking on the role of Kendra Saunders / Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt / Mr. Terrific, Anthony Carrigan portraying Rex Mason / Metamorpho, Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, and Christopher McDonald as Ron Troupe.
As a lifelong fan of animated action series and someone who grew up watching shows like G.I. Joe and Transformers, I am beyond excited to learn that Creature Commandos will be exclusively released on Max in November! It brings back memories of my childhood spent glued to the TV, eagerly awaiting each new episode. While I understand that Superman is also making a comeback, set for an exclusive theater release on July 11, 2025, I must admit that the nostalgia factor tips the scale in favor of Creature Commandos for me.
