DC Studios' Lanterns Series Adds Slow Horses and Black Mirror Director

As a long-time comic book enthusiast who’s seen more than a few adaptations come and go, I can confidently say that HBO’s upcoming DC series, “Lanterns,” has caught my attention like no other. With James Hawes at the helm, known for his exceptional work on shows like “Slow Horses” and “Doctor Who,” I have high hopes for this intergalactic mystery.

The eagerly anticipated DC series, titled “Lanterns“, has secured its initial director. According to reports from The Hollywood Reporter, James Hawes is slated to direct the first two episodes of HBO’s “Lanterns” and serve as an executive producer for the series. This series, inspired by DC’s Green Lantern lore, will be the inaugural live-action television show within James Gunn and Peter Safran’s revamped DC Universe. Notably, Hawes has recently directed several episodes of the popular Apple TV+ series “Slow Horses“, as well as “Penny Dreadful” and “Snowpiercer“. Additionally, he has directed significant episodes of “Doctor Who“, including “The Empty Child” and “The Christmas Invasion”, and the “Black Mirror” episodes “Hated in the Nation” and “Smithereens.

Last month, it was officially announced that Kyle Chandler will play the character of Hal Jordan / Green Lantern in an upcoming project. The casting for John Stewart / Green Lantern is still ongoing, with Aaron Pierre from “Rebel Ridge” and Stephan James from “The Piano Lesson” reportedly undergoing auditions towards the end of this week.

What Is Lanterns About?

The series “Lanterns” focuses on John Stewart and Hal Jordan, two interstellar law enforcers who find themselves embroiled in a sinister, homegrown case while probing a murder within the heart of America. This series, which has received an eight-episode direct commission from HBO, is overseen by Chris Mundy, a key figure behind “Ozark,” Damon Lindelof of both “Watchmen” and “Lost,” and renowned comic creator Tom King.

We’re thrilled to welcome back Chris Mundy and Damon Lindelof, who are joining forces with Tom, in revitalizing DC’s ‘Green Lantern.’ According to Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content, this announcement brings us great joy. This series, as part of the creative vision of James and Peter for the DC Universe, signals a new and exciting phase.

What Is on the DC Universe Slate?

The lineup for DC Studios’ debut will feature “Superman” in 2025, followed by “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” in 2026. Other movies on the schedule include “The Brave and the Bold,” “Swamp Thing,” and “The Authority,” but their release dates are yet to be announced. Additionally, there will be television shows on HBO Max like “Waller,” “Booster Gold,” “Lanterns,” “Paradise Lost,” and an animated series called “Creature Commandos.

In 2023, Gunn clarified that while many believe it will be similar to Marvel 2.0, he emphasized significant differences. “I’ve learned a great deal at Marvel,” he said, “but our approach is unique. We’re constructing an overarching narrative akin to Marvel, yet more meticulously planned from the start since we’ve assembled a team of writers to fully outline the story. However, we’re also building a universe reminiscent of Star Wars or Game of Thrones, featuring multiple timelines, locations, and characters with complex moralities.
