A fresh series titled “The New History of the DC Universe” is set to debut this summer, aiming to simplify the intricate narrative that often leaves fans with a migraine when trying to follow the continuity of DC comics. The complexity of this universe, with multiple Crisis events, alternate Earths, and a vast Multiverse, can be overwhelming. However, this new series promises to untangle the tangled web by providing a comprehensive account of the 90-year journey of DC storytelling. Notably, it will boast an impressive lineup of renowned creators.
In issue #1 of “A New Perspective on DC History,” Mark Waid takes the helm (previously known for his work in “Batman/Superman: World’s Finest,” “Justice League Unlimited,” and “Batman & Robin: Year One”). Joining him are artists Jerry Ordway and Todd Nauck. This dynamic duo will provide a revitalized view of both the past and present of the DC Universe, focusing on Barry Allen, also known as The Flash, and his unique perspective.
Waid expressed that this endeavor was his dream, offering him the opportunity to consolidate the vast continuity of DC into a single, comprehensive timeline. He also mentioned the privilege of working alongside some of the most illustrious artists in comics, aiming to make it truly remarkable. For dedicated DC fans, there will be novel insights and an abundance of Easter eggs hidden throughout, making this series a must-read for enthusiasts of the DC universe.
In issue #1 of “A New Tale of the DC Universe,” we follow the story of Barry Allen, tracing his path from the inception of the DC Universe through to the emergence of the Justice Society and the glory days of heroes during the Golden Age.
Nauck expressed his immense enjoyment with the ongoing project, stating, “I’m really enjoying myself with this project.” He went on to say that Mark has been providing him with intriguing drawing material for each page, and it’s been a privilege to collaborate with Jerry Ordway, an acclaimed comics legend, on the art duties. Moreover, he praised the DC editorial team for offering extensive resources for reference, from which he’s been discovering fascinating aspects of DC history that he wasn’t previously aware of – despite his long-standing passion for reading DC comics!
Speaking as one of the artists who contributed to the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” in the 1980s, Jerry Ordway expressed his excitement about collaborating with Mark and Todd to craft the tale for this latest DC Universe.
In the first installment of “A New History of the DC Universe“, an impressive array of talented cover artists is showcased. The main cover is provided by Chris Samnee, who previously worked on “Batman & Robin: Year One“. Additionally, you’ll find variant covers from Dan Mora (“Justice League Unlimited“, “Superman“) and Ryan Sook (“Black Canary: Best of the Best“). Mike Cho is also involved, offering a cover featuring superheroes spanning DC’s history. Furthermore, there will be a foil variant cover from cover artist Stanley “Artgerm” Lau. Lastly, Scott Koblish will contribute a series of connecting wraparound variant covers for the series, illustrating DC’s iconic characters in chronological order across each issue.
Mark Waid and his team have quite a substantial task ahead, as it’s not an easy job to comprehensively record all the events that have unfolded within the DC Universe. This could indicate that DC is acknowledging the expansive nature of its history. By presenting this history in a four-issue limited series, both old and new readers will be given a chance to start from the beginning and get up to speed on what’s happened.
