DC’s Absolute Batman Puts a Modern Spin on Arkham Asylum (And It’s Depressing)

As a long-time fan of Batman and all things Gotham City, I must say that the latest development in Absolute Batman has left me both intrigued and slightly bewildered. The transformation of Arkham Asylum from a mere psychiatric facility to a global network of private prisons hidden on black sites is a game-changer for the Dark Knight.

In the ongoing tale of Absolute Batman, the narrative is redefining the traditional lore surrounding the Dark Knight, with recent developments unfolding within the hallowed grounds of Arkham Asylum. Distinct from Blackgate Penitentiary, this infamous institution houses Gotham City’s most deranged criminals. Villains such as the Joker, Penguin, and Two-Face are among its inmates, with Harley Quinn once serving as an employee before her alliance with the Clown Prince of Crime. By now, Arkham Asylum is a familiar setting to Batman enthusiasts, having graced numerous TV shows, movies, cartoons, and video games. However, Absolute Batman is crafting an unfamiliar version of Arkham Asylum that fans are not yet acquainted with, and it appears to be the most terrifying yet. BEWARE: The following content includes spoilers for Absolute Batman #3. Proceed at your own risk!

In my humble opinion, issue #3 of “Absolute Batman” delves deep into the gritty world of Gotham City, as I, the reviewer, find myself immersed in the storyline crafted by Scott Snyder, Nick Dragotta, Frank Martin, and Clayton Cowles. This installment primarily focuses on Batman (Bruce Wayne) grappling with a series of terrorist attacks orchestrated by the enigmatic Party Animals. It turns out that their mastermind is none other than Roman Sionis, better known as the Black Mask – a formidable adversary from Batman’s roster of nefarious foes, poised to challenge our hero in his initial major test.

Batman’s Arkham Asylum is going global

Arkham Asylum serves as a psychiatric institution aiming to restore its patients, but frequently finds success elusive. The Arkham clan established this facility, with key figures like Amadeus and Jeremiah Arkham playing significant roles. However, in the realm of the Absolute Universe, these names are irrelevant, and we discover from Harvey Dent that there exist numerous Arkham facilities instead.

A corporation named J.K. Holdings is financing an Ark M Fund, which constructs private prisons that are often situated on secret locations, making them untraceable. These sites have significant support from various foreign governments worldwide. The initial prototypes were Ark A in Santa Prisca, followed by Ark B in Russia and Ark C in China. The upcoming Ark M is expected to be the largest, and it’s currently being planned for Gotham. Our young protagonist, Bruce, discovers Ark M located on its own island near Gotham, and the magnitude of the task before him begins to feel increasingly daunting.

It’s plausible to envision that if Ark M proves successful, similar institutions like Arkham Asylums could be expedited globally at an increased rate. However, Batman initially believed he was dealing only with Black Mask and his gang of misfits, but the situation has since become significantly more intricate.

Absolute Batman introduces an all-new Arkham Asylum

In “Absolute Batman”, the transformation of Arkham Asylum marks a drastic shift, as it’s an establishment that has consistently failed to contain its inmates. From the “Batman: Arkham Asylum” video game series to television shows such as “Gotham” and “Batman: The Animated Series”, Arkham Asylum is often depicted as a chilling building in Gotham City, housing the city’s most notorious criminals.

In Batman’s legend, intriguing narratives have been crafted around Arkham Asylum, focusing on its menacing inmates who often cause chaos among the staff and make daring escapes or seizures of power. This asylum is a crucial element that shapes what many view as a classic Batman tale. However, with Arkham Asylum now being transformed into a government-run detention center, everything changes. The Caped Crusader, who once mainly dealt with street crime, must now grapple with political complexities on an unprecedented level. It remains to be seen if he can handle this new challenge.
