DC’s Absolute Green Lantern Team Teases Hal Jordan’s Very Bad Day, Alien Encounters, and More (Exclusive)

This year, DC’s extensive universe will grow with three fresh series, and one of the most eagerly awaited and enigmatic newcomers is Absolute Green Lantern. This series will be crafted by the skilled duo of Al Ewing and Jahnoy Lindsay, who are poised to shake up everything you thought you knew about the Green Lantern Corps. ComicBook recently had an exclusive chat with Ewing and Lindsay about alien meetings, a particularly terrible day for Hal Jordan, Jo Mullein taking charge, and more.

In the expansive Green Lantern lore, one of the most crucial Earth-related encounters was relatively minor, taking place when Hal Jordan initially crossed paths with Abin Sur and claimed his ring. To visualize a version of this event on a grander scale and with an increased sense of dread, you’re moving in the right direction.

As a movie enthusiast, I found myself pondering an intriguing scenario: Imagine if we, humans, were strangers to an alien’s legal and moral framework. What if this extraterrestrial descended from the cosmos, bestowing a mysterious green energy, effectively making first contact? It would undeniably be terrifying, peculiar, unlike any sci-fi tale we knew in the 60s. The closest I could envision was reminiscent of biblical narratives, where angels from heaven tried to communicate with humanity – a stark contrast to our familiar storytelling back then.

In a nutshell, Ewing explained that he aimed to convey a sense of mystery and unfamiliarity in his work, using the characters Hal Jordan and Jo Mullein as relatable touchpoints. The reader should feel like they’re witnessing extraordinary, alien events in real-time through these familiar faces. This is what I understood from Ewing’s thoughts.

In the chaos of the city being demolished by the colossal Lantern emblem, there’s also a significant link hidden amidst it all – Abin Sur. However, this Abin Sur remains enveloped in mystery and bears a striking contrast to his counterpart from the usual universe. Interestingly, this divergence was unintentional, but due to the exceptional muscular and otherworldly design, they decided to retain it.

As a passionate movie buff diving into the world of Green Lantern, I must confess there was initially some confusion about the character Abin Sur. Being new to the lore, my initial concept was of a tall and gangly figure. However, once I learned that Abin Sur is an established character with his unique appearance, I realized my mistake. Fortunately, editorial loved my idea and encouraged me to stick with it, as it perfectly aligns with their vision.

In a nutshell, Ewing expressed that the design was perfect, absolutely stunning, much like Abin Sur who is an enigma, as he’s alien and unfamiliar to us. Readers might find it hard to believe, but that’s exactly what they want and it’s fantastic. He went on to say he’s deeply captivated by Ewing’s work and appreciates everything being done for this book.

Lindsay expressed her gratitude, stating that working with you has truly been an exceptional and rewarding experience. She’s delighted to be a part of our team.

As a movie buff who’s been lucky enough to collaborate with characters such as Jo, Abin Sur, and John Stewart, it’s Jordan who has won my heart in the process of sketching. To put it into words, Hal is the one I’ve found myself falling for, both in terms of drawing him and witnessing his transformation throughout the storyline. Initially, Jo was captivating, serving as the main character and offering a thrill to illustrate her, but my fondness has shifted towards Hal due to the intriguing way his powers unfold across the book.

Initially, they were quite open emotionally. However, as I’ve been writing Jo, she seems to be becoming more guarded, more mysterious. Her past experiences seem to have affected her current behavior, unlike Hal who wears his emotions on his sleeve.

Ewing stated that Jo possesses an ability to interact with this extraterrestrial being that descends. There seems to be a link or commonality between the two scenarios, the two possible worlds.

In the world you’re familiar with, Hal Jordan is a skilled pilot and a well-known hero. However, the Hal Jordan fans will encounter in Absolute Green Lantern will be quite different. This Hal Jordan is set to experience an extremely challenging day, as the creator explained. To clarify, the changes made to Hal are not due to any dislike for the character but rather a creative choice. Ewing often challenges characters who A) he finds intriguing and B) have had success in their usual universe, by giving them hardships in the Absolute Universe. This method is a part of his writing style.

Ewing explained that he intended to provide Hal with an unusual Green Lantern experience, distinctly unlike the typical one, as evident in his unique way of speaking and the extraordinary events he discusses. In essence, it’s not your average Green Lantern tale for Hal.

Absolute Green Lantern #1 hits comic stores on April 2nd.
