Occasionally, a fresh comic book project proves to be a gold mine. For me, as a cinema devotee who’s deeply invested in DC’s universe, that moment has arrived with their Absolute Universe. The Absolute Universe is an essential part of DC’s broader All-In initiative, which aims to revitalize the brand. So far, they’ve knocked it out of the park, but there’s one potential pitfall that could jeopardize the entire Absolute Universe – a possibility we sincerely hope isn’t true. We’re referring to the strong likelihood that at some point, the Absolute Universe will interconnect, enabling team-ups and other crossovers.
As a fan, I must admit that the prospect of gathering the Absolute Universe versions of various heroes seems intriguing initially. Yet, it’s hard not to feel a sense of apprehension. Such crossovers might potentially mark the end of this beloved roster, which we deeply cherish. Hopefully, the creative minds working behind the scenes will surprise us with an outcome contrary to our fears, and we eagerly await such positive news. However, given past experiences, I can’t help but harbor concerns about the potential consequences of these team-ups.
For those not keeping track so far: DC’s Absolute Universe represents a fresh universe within the larger DC brand. This innovative approach offers distinct versions and origins for well-known characters like Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman. More recently, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, and The Flash have also received these unique makeovers. The enthusiastic response from fans is a testament to the appeal of these new interpretations, but we’re concerned that this enjoyable trend might come to an end.
The Success of the Absolute Universe
right from its debut, the Absolute Universe was warmly embraced by fans due to its unique and exhilarating spin on familiar characters. Characters such as Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman, and Green Lantern were given fresh perspectives, making their stories feel captivating and original once more. Now, Batman is depicted as a young working-class hero, Wonder Woman wields magic, Superman witnessed the destruction of his home by his own people, and the origin story of Green Lantern offers an unfamiliar twist. Essentially, each narrative offers something new and thrilling for readers to look forward to, giving them ample motivation to return for more adventures.
Each of these superhero stories functions independently due to their self-contained narratives and settings. For instance, Batman’s tale remains consistent even as it revises the origins of his villains because he is responding to the world around him. Wonder Woman, having been separated from her Amazons, struggles with the idea of joining a larger team despite still having family ties. Superman finds himself wounded, disillusioned, and in hiding, making his story difficult to reconcile within the broader context of the other characters. However, it’s perfectly fine for these stories to stand alone, as they are crafted around individual experiences rather than a cohesive group dynamic. With time, these narratives could evolve and become more interconnected.
Crossovers and Team-Ups Can Ruin the Mood
As someone who’s deeply invested in the world of films and comics alike, I must admit a strong desire to witness these distinctive heroes collaborating on an epic scale. Yet, there’s a nagging concern that such collaboration might compel the characters to compromise their unique traits and adapt to fit within a larger ensemble. The essence of what makes these tales captivating could be at risk in this process. To put it straightforwardly, history shows us that characters often undergo alterations to accommodate larger teams or storylines. A closer look at any significant arc will reveal these changes, and they’re not exclusive to DC Comics either. For now, let’s preserve the charm of the Absolute Universe without rushing into any drastic changes.
The Trinity are captivating enough on their own without needing a broader universe to amplify their narratives. Similarly, it’s essential not to overlook the multitude of secondary characters waiting in the wings, such as Batman’s numerous protégés. It would be intriguing to observe these supporting characters stepping into the limelight before larger ensembles take center stage. This approach allows the storyline to progress organically, without forcing multiple teams to collaborate unnecessarily.
In the meantime, other champions from the Cosmic Realm are just starting out on their journeys. Instead of rushing to team them up or intertwine their narratives, it’s essential to give them the same level of consideration as those who have already made their mark. It’s exciting to imagine what J’onn J’onzz (Martian Manhunter), Barry Allen (The Flash), and the latest Green Lanterns will accomplish next, with a storyline that makes it seem like they are the sole superpowered individuals in their respective regions.
The Potential Future of the Absolute Universe
If the infinite cosmos continues its course and the ambitious project thrives, it seems unavoidable that groups similar to the Justice League will emerge. As for whether this setup could work, definitely! (A bit of humor unintentionally added, but welcomed). Yet, there’s also a chance that this arrangement might shatter the balance in this universe.
The creators of the different ‘Absolute Universe’ series have hinted at collaborations, so this idea isn’t just conjured up. If you don’t believe me, Jeff Lemire himself has been quite open about discussing possible partnerships on his Substack (give it a read!). So yes, team-ups are indeed the long-term plan for the Absolute Universe, and we hope our suspicions will be alleviated when that happens.
