DC’s Clayface Movie Finds Its Director (and It’s Not Who Fans Expected)

Among the forthcoming projects in the DC Universe series is the movie titled “Clayface,” penned by Mike Flanagan. Despite Flanagan’s exceptional skills as a director making him an excellent fit for the project, his packed schedule will keep him from directing “Clayface.” After a thorough search, it has been announced that James Watkins will take charge instead. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, he is currently finalizing his agreement with Warner Bros., following a presentation to DC Studios co-head James Gunn. Production on “Clayface” is expected to commence later this year, and no actors have been cast for the film yet.

The character named Clayface was initially unveiled in December 2024, and it swiftly scheduled its debut for September 11, 2026. As suggested by the plot details that have been disclosed, this film’s narrative revolves around a struggling actor who resorts to injecting himself with a mysterious substance to maintain his relevance in the industry – similar to the Best Picture nominee The Substance. Given this description, it seems that Clayface may be inspired by the comic book stories of Basil Karlo, a B-list actor who transforms into Clayface after an overdose of chemicals.

For some time now, Warner Bros. has been actively seeking a suitable director for the project titled Clayface. It’s recently been reported that the studio has whittled down their potential candidates to Jeff Wadlow and Watkins. The upcoming production of Clayface will be jointly overseen by DC Studios’ Gunn, Peter Safran, Matt Reeves, and Lynn Harris.

The origin of the Clayface project stems from Flanagan’s ambition to create a chilling blend of horror, thriller, and tragedy, which is why Warner Bros. sought directors with a background in horror. Although many fans might have preferred Flanagan himself at the helm, choosing Watkins is a sensible decision given his impressive portfolio. Movies like “Speak No Evil,” “The Woman in Black,” and “Eden Lake” showcase his knack for creating suspenseful thrillers with powerful acting performances. Although not all of Watkins’ projects are universally acclaimed, the blend of suspense and character-driven storytelling should make for a gripping adaptation of Clayface, which aims to tell a compelling tale about a character undergoing a harrowing transformation. It will be intriguing to observe how Watkins’ directing style meshes with Flanagan’s script.

The main task at hand now involves finding the perfect actor for our leading role. So far, no clear favorites have been identified; although Alan Tudyk provides the voice for Clayface in the animated series “Creature Commandos”, this doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll transition to live-action. With a director on board and filming of “Clayface” scheduled for later this year, casting announcements may be imminent. When speculated names begin surfacing, fans will have an idea if Warner Bros. is considering an up-and-coming actor or if they’re aiming for a well-known star to boost the film’s popularity as a mid-budget production.
