DC's James Gunn Plays Coy About the Guardians of the Galaxy Cast Joining Franchise

As a long-time fan who has followed the Marvel and DC universes since their inception, I am thrilled at the prospect of James Gunn’s take on the DC Universe. His work on Guardians of the Galaxy was nothing short of magical, and it will be intriguing to see how he breathes new life into the DC mythos.

Looking ahead to next year’s “Superman” film and beyond, James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe promises an exciting future for fans. There’s been much anticipation about Gunn’s interpretation of the DC mythology, especially following his successful work on Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy.” So far, Sean Gunn is the only main cast member from the “Guardians” franchise confirmed to join the DC Universe, taking on the roles of Maxwell Lord, Weasel, and G.I. Robot. In a recent social media post, Gunn was asked to share which characters he’d like his other “Guardians of the Galaxy” collaborators to play in the DCU, but unfortunately, he couldn’t disclose those details.

“Well that would be a spoiler wouldn’t it?” Gunn answered.

Will the Guardians of the Galaxy Cast Join the DCU?

Fans have been advocating for specific DC roles for Guardians of the Galaxy cast members since Gunn took on his role at DC Studios. From Chris Pratt as Booster Gold to Dave Bautista as Bane or Hugo Strange, there’s a wide range of suggestions. Pratt himself, in an interview with ComicBook about The Garfield Movie, hinted that both possibilities are plausible and he might appear in both DC superhero franchises.

In the conversation we had, Pratt expressed that it seems logical for him to return as Star Lord, but he also suggested that anything could happen, especially with James Gunn now at DC. He mused about the possibility of finding a suitable role over there, or even dual roles. His words were, “Why not both? I think it’s a hundred percent possible.”

What Is On the DC Universe Slate?

Based on Gunn and Safran’s announcement in January 2023, the first lineup of films from DC Studios will feature Superman in 2025, followed by Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow in 2026. Other movies on the slate include The Brave and the Bold, Swamp Thing, and The Authority, although their release dates are yet to be announced. In addition, HBO Max will air television shows like Waller, Booster Gold, Lanterns, Paradise Lost, and an animated Creature Commandos series. Rumors suggest that a live-action Teen Titans movie and an animated Jurassic League movie are under development at DC Studios, but neither has been officially confirmed.

2023 saw James Gunn clarify that the upcoming project isn’t simply Marvel 2.0. While he did acquire valuable knowledge at Marvel, he emphasized their differences. He described their central story as being similar to Marvel in scale, but more meticulously planned out from the start due to a team of writers shaping it comprehensively. Additionally, he likened the universe they’re creating to both Star Wars and Game of Thrones, featuring diverse settings, time periods, and characters with moral complexities.
