As a die-hard DC fan who has spent countless hours poring over comic books and following every twist and turn in the universe, I can confidently say that the latest casting news for the upcoming DC’s Lanterns series is nothing short of exhilarating! Garret Dillahunt joining the cast as a mysterious character named William Macon is not only intriguing but also hints at a potential villain who could shake things up in a big way.

As an avid fan, I’m thrilled to share the exciting news about DC’s Lanterns! This long-awaited series is gathering momentum with impressive castings, and the latest addition to the mix is none other than Garret Dillahunt (Fear The Walking Dead, The Gifted)! According to Deadline, he’s set for a significant recurring role. What makes this even more intriguing is the official description of his character, which hints at some surprising details that suggest he might be a formidable Green Lantern adversary. Dillhunt now joins an already stellar cast featuring Kyle Chandler, Aaron Pierre, and Kelly MacDonald. I can hardly wait to see this talented ensemble bring the DC universe to life!

Dillahunt’s character is named William Macon, a contemporary cowboy portrayed in the official description. He appears as a self-important, conspiracy-believing individual who hides his relentless ambition beneath a charming and strategically crafted exterior.

The moniker William Macon holds special importance when discussing the persistent Green Lantern adversary, Black Hand. Interestingly, in the comic books, this antagonist’s true name is actually William Hand. From an early age, William developed an unhealthy fascination with death, culminating in the tragic act of killing and preserving their pet as a taxidermy exhibit. Later, an encounter with Atrocitus, leader of the Red Lanterns of Rage, led to him stealing the Cosmic Divining Rod.

A Powerful Foe

He had the ability to draw power from the Lantern Power Rings and locate them, which he made use of frequently. However, he was never able to defeat the Lanterns, and over time, his sanity began to deteriorate. In a desperate attempt to escape his torment, he activated the Cosmic Divining Rod on himself. Tragically, this didn’t result in permanent death, as Scar – a rogue Guardian who would later betray the Green Lantern Corps – created a Black Lantern ring and resurrected William, transforming him into a figure representing Death within the emotional spectrum.

As a gamer, diving into the lore, it all culminated in the thrilling narrative known as Blackest Night. But for now, let’s save the deep dive on that for another time. Moving on to the Lanterns, the description subtly suggests a darker side and an exceptional skill at hiding it – something not entirely consistent with how Black Hand has been depicted in the comics. However, this new portrayal, combining power manipulation, conspiracy theories, and modern cowboy motifs, certainly adds an intriguing twist to the character.

Given that the plot revolves around an enigma surrounding a pivotal murder, it’s entirely logical to introduce a character like Black Hand into the mix. As demonstrated in ‘Blackest Night’, his character development and influence on the larger DCU can be monumental once his identity is revealed. Moreover, this approach offers a refreshing twist compared to other Sinestro narratives, even though most Green Lantern enthusiasts would likely concur that Sinestro should feature in some capacity within this storyline.

On the show, Chris Mundy serves as the head writer (showrunner), with Tom King and Damon Lindelof collaborating on writing and taking on executive producer roles. Additionally, James Hawes is an executive producer and will direct the first two episodes of the series. As for the release date of Lanterns, it hasn’t been disclosed yet, but we’re eagerly awaiting that news.
