DC’s New Batman Series Brings Big Changes to the Costume, Batmobile, and More

At ComicsPro DC has unveiled the team responsible for ushering in the next phase of Batman’s story, and they are undeniably skilled in their craft. DC has given a sneak peek at Batman #1, set to debut in September, with Matt Fraction penning the script, Jorge Jimenez handling the art, Tomeu Morey responsible for colors, and Clayton Cowles taking care of the lettering. As you’ll notice in the images provided, this upcoming Batman saga will feature a significant costume transformation, as Batman adopts a new blue and gray suit. Additionally, it will introduce a fresh design for the Batmobile and an updated atmosphere for Gotham City itself. You can take a closer look at some of these exciting new elements in the images below.

Fraction stated, “I wouldn’t exist as a comic book writer if not for Batman, as he was the first comic I ever read.” Jorge and I have a unique perspective on Batman that leans heavily into superhero themes. Our version of Batman comes with a new Batmobile, a revamped costume, fresh characters, and many familiar ones too – both good and bad. We want to honor all aspects of Batman, making him the most iconic character in comics.

Speaking as a passionate filmmaker, let me express how thrilled I am to have this opportunity – something I’ve longed for since day one, and to share it with an artist as exceptional as Matt is truly a dream come true. In regards to my work on Batman, the creative process has been a labor of love spanning years. Working alongside James and Chip has required me to adapt and grow, not just in speed but also style. Each step has been a learning experience, an enjoyable journey that led me to explore Gotham City from various perspectives. More significantly, this journey has equipped me with a plethora of artistic tools, refining my style over time until it reached the current harmonious blend we see today.

For over 8 decades, Batman has been a staple in publishing, and this is just the fourth time the comic series has undergone a number change. The tales will be interconnected yet largely self-contained, offering a fresh opportunity for a new adventure, style, or challenge in each issue. As for the suit, it appears to combine aspects of the current design with another iconic color scheme, featuring shades of blue and gray.

Jiménez stated, “In this upcoming phase, we’re creating a modernized look for our storyline, featuring Batman in his iconic blue suit once more. This change is meant to strike a balance between the familiar and the new, offering an evolution that still respects the design we’ve been using lately. Concurrently, I’m also focusing on updating Gotham City’s visual style, introducing a unique twist that distinguishes it from my past interpretations. I aim for a hint of pop art influence, something that gently references classic tales while maintaining the grim and foreboding atmosphere of today’s Batman.

Fraction notes that one reason Batman endures and resonates so strongly is because he’s extremely resilient,” he said. “Batman can embody a variety of roles for various audiences, regardless if it’s in the comic books, animated series, or live-action films.
