The DC film adaptation of Sgt. Rock, slated to be directed by Luca Guadagnino, has been shelved by DC. Instead, DC’s initial foray into its new cinematic universe will be the Superman movie, set to reboot the franchise and launch a series of subsequent projects such as Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, a standalone Batman film, and more. Despite the intention to create another interconnected universe, DC’s James Gunn aims to provide a platform for renowned directors to contribute their unique stories within this shared space.
It seems that the most captivating upcoming project is “Sgt. Rock,” a film centered around a lesser-known but beloved DC comic character. Initially slated to be directed by Luca Guadagnino, with Colin Farrell as the chosen actor to bring Sgt. Rock to life, this production would have given Farrell a unique chance to portray both The Penguin in Reeves’ universe and a hero in Gunn’s universe. For several months last year, there were whispers that Guadagnino might collaborate with Daniel Craig for the role of Sgt. Rock, but it appears he never fully committed and ultimately withdrew from discussions without disclosing his reasons. However, the momentum for this action-packed movie was building steadily towards an imminent production start until quite recently.
Sgt. Rock Movie Canceled at DC Studios; First Plot Details Revealed
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the DC movie based on the character Sgt. Rock has been abandoned. Umberto Gonzalez, an insider and journalist, revealed that the film’s cancellation was due to scheduling issues, as it required shooting to begin this summer, but it seemed unlikely that would happen. Despite being in pre-production with casting already progressing for the project, the film could not proceed. Colin Farrell was set to play the lead character Sgt. Rock and Mike Faist, known for his role in Challengers, was cast as a member of East Company.
As reported by THR, the proposed Sgt. Rock movie would have depicted East Company joining forces with a French resistance fighter amidst World War II. Their mission was to find the Spear of Destiny, a spear said to have been used to wound Jesus Christ during his crucifixion. The Nazis were also after this artifact as they believed it had supernatural powers that could make it an invaluable weapon or resource for them. Regrettably, this Sgt. Rock version, which reportedly boasted a well-written script by Justin Kuritzkes, will not be produced.
Currently, it’s uncertain whether Sgt. Rock will grace the live-action DC universe anytime soon. For years, a Sgt. Rock movie has been in development, and I had high hopes that this would be the one to hit the silver screen, but unfortunately, it wasn’t destined to be. Luca Guadagnino is now tied up with several other projects, including a fresh take on American Psycho, leaving him quite occupied. Perhaps Brendan Fraser, having other commitments now, might find time for another season of The Penguin instead.
