Enthusiasts are looking forward to the DC Universe reaching the same expansive level as the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but DC Studios’ co-chairmen, James Gunn and Peter Safran, are focusing on one film at a time. They shared their plans during a recent press event with ComicBook in attendance, explaining that each movie will stand alone as its own self-contained narrative, regardless of whether viewers have watched other DC Comics adaptations. This approach aligns with Gunn’s previous comments about minimizing post-credits scenes and unnecessary serialization whenever feasible. It’s a strategy that has proven successful for numerous big franchises in the past.
Gunn clarified that every story or project we’re working on should be self-contained, meaning you can understand and enjoy them individually. For instance, it shouldn’t be necessary to have watched ‘Creature Commandos’ to fully appreciate ‘Superman’. Similarly, watching ‘Lanterns’ doesn’t require prior knowledge of ‘Superman’. While there will be connections between these stories, they won’t rely heavily on each other for understanding.
In the world of DCU films and series, each standalone piece is enjoyable, but according to Gunn, they’re also part of a larger tale that unfolds over an extended period. This method resembles non-sequel serialization we’ve seen before, like in the MCU. Initially, connections between different titles might seem like Easter eggs, but later, they make more sense as you look back. This way, superfans can appreciate the intricacies without it being a prerequisite for everyone else to understand the story.
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I found myself at the same gathering where Gunn highlighted the crucial role of writers in the DCU’s grand narrative. His perspective towards this beloved franchise is one that prioritizes organic development over rapid-fire execution on screen. In simpler terms, he aims to make every scene feel like a natural and integral part of the story, rather than just hurrying to put everything out there as quickly as possible.
He noted, “In the past, our focus was solely on being a company driven by writers and scripts. We’ve always prioritized quality over quantity. Our main concern is ensuring we have an exceptional script, as we are a brand with an 80-year history that houses some of the world’s most iconic heroes and villains, possibly even the greatest.
The DC Universe launched in December, starting with the series ‘Creature Commandos’, currently available for streaming on Max. On July 11th, it will make its big-screen debut as ‘Superman’ premieres in cinemas for the first time.
