The revised manuals for Dungeons & Dragons offer a wealth of fresh material for seasoned players and newcomers alike, with refined player options and mechanisms that have significantly addressed many problems that surfaced when the 5th Edition was initially released in 2014. However, there are still areas for improvement and constructive criticism can be found within the latest editions of the Player’s Handbook and Dungeon Master’s Guide . Nevertheless, Wizards of the Coast excelled in creating a completely new Monster Manual. Boasting 504 unique monsters and 75 brand-new entries, this latest edition of the Monster Manual aimed to rectify the issues with the CR system inherent to 5th Edition by striving for a more balanced encounter experience for parties at all levels.
Previously, fearsome beasts provided challenging encounters for experienced adventurers, but there were limited fey creatures available for parties other than Bheur Hags, which had a challenge rating (CR) of 7 upon their introduction in Volo’s Guide To Monsters. However, Dungeon Masters who appreciate the intricate, mischievous plots associated with hag storylines now have an ideal villain for their sinister schemes with the addition of the Arch-Hag. This enigmatic character, described as unpredictable, self-centered, and covetous with peculiar quirks and eccentricities, transforms a routine low to mid-level threat into a potential campaign-defining antagonist.
Arch-Hags Are the Vicious Crones Dungeones & Dragons Fans Have Been Dreaming Of
In contrast to the well-known characters Baba Lysaga and Baba Yaga from Barovia, who have previously embodied the witch archetype in Dungeons & Dragons games, the Arch-Hag offers a more adaptable figure of evil for Dungeon Masters to customize fey-themed adventures. The 5th Edition from 2014 had noticeably fewer options in this area. The Arch-Hag has a Challenge Rating (CR) of 21 and can utilize the “Coven Magic” trait, similar to other hags. Furthermore, the Arch-Hag possesses four Legendary Resistances that it can use daily, which increases to five if a party decides to confront it within its lair.
Remarkably, the Arch-Hag possesses an unusual ability called “Spiteful Escape”. This function acts as a safety mechanism, becoming active only if the hag is more than 30 feet away from its most despised entity. The Spiteful Escape causes the Arch-Hag to drop to just one hit point in situations where it would otherwise be destroyed, then instantly teleports to a safe demiplane. This transportation not only affects the Arch-Hag but also any creature within 60 feet, who will then suffer from a malicious curse. This curse negatively impacts their ability checks and saving throws. Moreover, the Arch-Hag can precisely locate the cursed creature regardless of its location in the multiverse.
Even though Arch-Hags seem invulnerable, they do have a weakness. Each Arch-Hag carries an anathema – this could range from one of their teeth to a celestial body plucked from the heavens. Finding these anathemas might be challenging, but it’s the only foolproof method to ensure that these potent crones remain permanently deceased.
