Dead by Daylight’s Skull Merchant Rework Shakes Up Gameplay!

In a recent blog post, the creators of “Dead by Daylight” have announced significant adjustments for one of the game’s killers, The Skull Merchant. Unlike her past versions, the developers at Behaviour Interactive are giving The Skull Merchant a rework they describe as “quite distinct.” They’ve shared extensive details about these changes and the reasoning behind them. Essentially, the development team recognizes that The Skull Merchant is a contentious character, and their aim is to make her enjoyable both for players who control her and those who face her as opponents. For fans of The Skull Merchant, this update may stir debate.

Essentially, the revamp in The Skull Merchant’s design aims to make the character more interactive during gameplay. The developers are overhauling the drones this character employs, focusing on their functionality and visual aesthetics. Previously, Stealth Drones from The Skull Merchant were used to identify Survivors, but now, their complete detection zones will be invisible to players. However, Survivors can still observe the direction of the detection zone. This modification is being made because the original scan lines were visually disruptive and frequently contrasted poorly with the overall appearance of the game.

In the game Skull Merchant, players will eventually gain the ability to operate Stealth Drones from a distance. These drones can only be controlled once they’ve been active for a specific duration. A new resource called Power has been added to each Drone, which gets depleted when taken over. Essentially, Skull Merchant can use these drones to crash into opponents, causing damage. If the drone collides with survivors or objects, it will be destroyed and control will return to the player (Skull Merchant). The purpose is to highlight the idea of using drones as a hunting tool for enemies, while simplifying the concept. In place of previous background effects, Behaviour is switching to this new method. This change will also help survivors understand that if a Drone remains still, it’s scanning, but if it moves, there’s a risk of collision.

In the updated gameplay, survivors can continue to attempt hacking into the Skull Merchant’s drones, but there are modifications in this feature. If a player successfully hacks, their location will be unveiled. On the flip side, if they fail, not only will they be unable to try again for a specified duration, but also their position will be exposed by Killer Instinct. This endeavor carries a substantial risk! Lastly, the Skull Merchant is receiving a new power without a current name. It’s inspired by the game “red light, green light.” When this ability is activated, a warning signal will sound, and any survivors sprinting will show up on the killer’s radar; those who remain motionless will stay hidden.

Currently, Behaviour Interactive has not specified a timeline for when these updates will appear in Dead by Daylight. Regrettably, the studio suggests that these changes are still quite some distance away. However, with such ambitious plans, it’ll be intriguing to observe the player reaction once they eventually become active!
