As a seasoned gamer with countless hours logged into roguelikes, I can confidently say that the impending arrival of Dead Cells‘ Update 35, or The End is Near, has me both excited and wistful. Over the past six years, this game has been a constant companion in my virtual adventures, its challenging yet rewarding gameplay keeping me engaged for countless hours.
Ever since its debut in 2018, “Dead Cells” has emerged as one of the top-selling roguelike games on the market. The developers, Twin Motion and Evil Empire, have consistently added both paid and free content to build on the game’s popularity, but last year they announced that Update 35 would be the final content update for fans. Known as “The End is Near,” this update entered its alpha stage in August, marking it as the closing chapter for “Dead Cells.” However, the team has been meticulously working to ensure everything functions smoothly. Fortunately, Motion Twin revealed today that we’re just a few weeks away from the release of “The End is Near.”
In their latest Twitter post, Motion Twin has announced that the upcoming expansion, titled “The End is Near“, will be released on August 19th. This means you’ve got roughly three weeks left to wait from the time of this conversation. The free update introduces three new Curse additions, such as Anathema, which allows players to unleash heavy Area of Effect (AOE) damage at the expense of being cursed. Additionally, it adds three new enemy types to offer more diversity in your upcoming run through Dead Cells’ expansive map. “The End is Near” also includes several new legendary weapon affixes, balance adjustments for The Bank, and a few new head customization options.
Although it’s unfortunate that support for the game Dead Cells is wrapping up after six years of development, this final content update should offer a fitting farewell to long-term fans. The closure also allows Motion Twin to shift their entire workforce towards their next project. Last year at The Game Awards, they unveiled Windblown, a multiplayer roguelite emphasizing fast-action gameplay. Simultaneously, Evil Empire has introduced The Rogue Prince of Persia into early access, which means the team will keep refining it to prepare for its full launch.
In addition, it’s important to note that the game Dead Cells still hasn’t reached its final chapter of new content. Although additional updates for the video game might not be coming, a French animation studio named Bobbypills has begun releasing episodes of an animated series titled Dead Cells: Immortalis, which is inspired by the game. You can catch these episodes on YouTube; however, since the show is in French, you’ll need to read along with the English subtitles.
“You can grab ‘Dead Cells’ right now on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, or your personal computer. The latest update, number 35, arrives on August 19th.”
