In a new adventure, Deadpool or Wolverine – both graduates of the Weapon X program – have been paired up and transported to Deadwood, South Dakota. Their objective: confronting one of the deadliest mutants ever known. However, things took an unexpected turn when Deadpool began speaking like a robot and assaulting Wolverine, accusing him of being an “X-Cutioner” and questioning why he hadn’t been activated. Longtime X-Men enthusiasts will recall the term “X-Cutioner,” as it has historically been linked to Stryfe, a malevolent clone of Cable. In issue #3 of Deadpool/Wolverine, written by Benjamin Percy and Joshua Cassara, readers finally learned that Stryfe had embedded “X-Cutioner” programming in Deadpool and Wolverine, but the details of his master plan remained unclear until then. It is now revealed that Stryfe is revisiting an old scheme, one with a significant twist that makes it even more perilous for our heroes.
In the X-Men universe’s lore, “X-Cutioner” originates from the 1992 crossover event titled “The X-Cutioner’s Song.” The narrative centers around a character named Stryfe masquerading as Cable while attempting to eliminate Professor X. This deception led both the X-Men and X-Factor to pursue Cable and his team, X-Force. However, it was all part of Stryfe’s scheme. His real objective involved unleashing the Legacy Virus, a mutant-killing virus. A hint about the return of this lethal threat has surfaced in Deadpool/Wolverine #3, as the Legacy Virus is being reintroduced as Legacy 2.0. The original Legacy Virus posed an immense existential risk for mutants, and its resurfacing under a new form could bring catastrophic results for all Earth’s inhabitants, regardless of their genetic makeup.
The Legacy Virus Was One of the Worst Things to Every Happen to Mutants
The backstory of the Legacy Virus is marked by sorrow. At some point in his life, Stryfe concocted this virus and secretly entrusted it to Mister Sinister inside a canister, claiming it contained 2000 years’ worth of Summers genetic material. This was an ingenious scheme, as nothing enticed Sinister more than genetics from the Summers lineage. Once opened, the virus escaped. Stryfe, a follower of Apocalypse in a distant future, had been taught that only the strong should endure, and he saw the Legacy Virus as a test for past mutants. In his view, if they couldn’t withstand the virus, then they didn’t deserve to live on.
The Legacy Virus specifically affected the X-genes of mutants, causing their bodies to lose the capacity for producing healthy cells. Originally, there were three strains of this virus – Legacy-1, Legacy-2, and Legacy-3. Legacy-1 halted cellular reproduction, while Legacy-2 progressed at a slower pace and exhibited symptoms such as lesions, fever, cough, and overall weakness (it’s worth noting that the Legacy Virus functioned similarly to mutant AIDS). Those infected with Legacy-2 eventually lost control of their powers. Legacy-3 was an evolved form of the virus, originating in the body of the mutant Infectia, capable of transmitting to humans. The X-Men first learned about the Legacy Virus when Illyana Rasputin, who had returned to her original age, fell ill with an unknown disease. Neither Beast nor Moira MacTaggert could find a cure, and Illyana ultimately succumbed to the virus. She was the first of many mutants to die from this virus, with Pyro, Mastermind, and Kwannon also falling victim to it. Beast eventually developed a cure, but it would prove fatal to the first person administered. Colossus made the ultimate sacrifice by giving his life to halt the spread of the virus that took his sister’s life.
Stryfe’s Legacy 2.0 Is Meant to Target Humanity
During its time, the Legacy Virus posed one of the gravest dangers to mutants and solidified Stryfe’s status as one of Earth’s most menacing mutants. The eradication of the Legacy Virus was a significant victory for mutantkind, though it came at the cost of Colossus’s life. Now, with Stryfe reappearing alongside Legacy 2.0, there’s cause for concern. However, Deadpool/Wolverine #3 hints that this new iteration of the Legacy Virus is designed for a chilling objective: annihilating mankind entirely.
During the comic, Wolverine works to trigger Deadpool’s X-Cutioner persona for interrogation purposes. Wolverine uncovers that the X-Cutioners were intended to eradicate mankind, and later, the Legacy 2.0 virus is revealed, which demonstrates Stryfe’s strategy for carrying out this destruction. So far, Wolverine has managed to resist his X-Cutioner programming; however, the release of Legacy 2.0 could prove fatal for humanity.
Deadpool/Wolverine #3 is now on sale where ever comics are sold.
