As a long-time comic book enthusiast and a fan of both Deadpool and Wolverine, I’m excited about the potential team-up between Deadpool and Gambit. The idea of seeing Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool in a supporting role for Channing Tatum’s Gambit is intriguing, especially since Reynolds mentioned it himself. It’s like watching Spider-Man swing into action while keeping an eye on the next big thing – Gambit!
As a cinephile, I can’t help but draw parallels between the electrifying duo of Deadpool and Gambit, reminiscent of the unforgettable pairing of Deadpool and Wolverine. The R-rated blockbuster, should it materialize, could potentially surpass the success of the Deadpool and Wolverine collaboration, which, despite originating from the Fox X-Men films, seamlessly integrated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe under Disney’s Marvel Studios, earning an impressive $1.3 billion worldwide, making it the second highest-grossing film of the year.
As a film enthusiast, I’ve always viewed Deadpool more as a sidekick rather than the lead character in his own story. Don’t get me wrong, we highlight him when needed, but it’s crucial to strip him of his usual advantages for the audience to truly empathize with his struggles. And frankly, I’m not sure if I can craft that underdog scenario again, making him the centerpiece once more.
In a continuation that takes place six years after Deadpool 2’s time-travel escapades in 2018, Deadpool and Wolverine find themselves. Following a brief stint on Earth-616 where they were denied Avengers membership, Deadpool went back to his original universe, Earth-10005. Here, he was living the life of a toupee-wearing car salesman after retiring from heroics. His relationship with Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) ended, and he embarked on a personal quest for self-worth and exploration alongside an unconventional Wolverine from another reality. This adventure aimed to save their universe from being erased by Paradox (Matthew Macfadyen) and the Time Variance Authority.
Following their trimming by the TVA, Deadpool and Wolverine wind up in the Void – a place often referred to as a “metaphysical scrapyard” for characters discarded from franchises, such as Johnny Storm (played by Chris Evans) from the Fantastic Four, Jennifer Garner’s Elektra, Wesley Snipes’ Blade, Dafne Keen’s X-23, and Gambit.
Director Shawn Levy, who was previously involved with the directorial duties for Deadpool and Wolverine, is among several filmmakers who initially planned to create Channing Tatum’s standalone Gambit film at Fox. Regrettably, this X-Men spinoff did not come to fruition before Disney purchased 20th Century Fox in 2019.
Ryan Reynolds praised Andrew Garfield for his performance in “Spider-Man: No Way Home” by saying, “The way you intertwined cultural discussions with the movie’s plot was remarkable.” He further added, “Your portrayal moved me to tears. One of the most emotional moments I’ve ever experienced was watching Wesley Snipes appear on screen at Comic-Con, and seeing people cry because they suddenly realized how much they had missed him.
Reynolds and Jackman have been cryptic in discussing their possible involvement in upcoming ensemble films “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars,” set to conclude the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Multiverse Arc in 2027.
Reynolds expressed uncertainty about the future of the Deadpool franchise, stating that he feels the character thrives on two key elements: scarcity and surprise. He pointed out that it had been six years since the last film because it demands his full attention, and as a father of four, he doesn’t want to be an absentee parent, dreading missing important moments in his children’s lives.
Ryan Reynolds mentioned that he’s unsure about the future of Deadpool, but what he can confirm is that our aim was to create a standalone, complete film rather than using it as an advertisement for a follow-up.
In a surprising move, Reynolds, who was involved in both writing and producing the film, unveiled an earlier, previously undisclosed scene from the movie’s post-credits sequence (now with enhanced clarity). This scene reveals that Tatum’s Gambit managed to make it through his confrontation with the void-dwelling creature Alioth.
In his conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Reynolds admitted that he’s not privy to the inner workings of Marvel’s bookkeeping meetings regarding a possible Gambit spinoff. However, he shared that there seems to be an intense fascination with [Tatum] in the role, similar to what happened during his own journey with Deadpool. In essence, Reynolds believes that once they see it succeeding, that’s essentially all Marvel needs – to witness it in action.
Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine is now available to stream at home.
