Deadpool and Marvel Ultimate Alliance Rumored to Return on Xbox

As a veteran gamer who’s been through countless console generations and witnessed the rise and fall of many beloved franchises, I can’t help but feel a twinge of excitement at the prospect of revisiting two of my all-time favorite Marvel games: Marvel Ultimate Alliance and Deadpool.

Over the years, Activision has been known for publishing exceptional video games starring Marvel characters. Regrettably, these licenses have run out, making popular titles like Deadpool and Marvel Ultimate Alliance difficult to play for newcomers. However, there’s a possibility that this might change in the future. In the latest episode of the Xbox Era podcast, co-host “Shpeshal” Nick Baker discussed a rumor suggesting that Xbox is attempting to collaborate with Marvel to reintroduce these games via backwards compatibility. As always, it’s important to approach such rumors with caution, but given Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard last year, this development seems plausible.

The first installment of Marvel Ultimate Alliance was initially launched in 2006, and it was made available again on PS4, PC, and Xbox One in 2016. However, this version was removed from digital platforms only two years later. In contrast, the game Deadpool emerged in 2013 and was brought to PS4 and Xbox One in 2015. Despite being delisted in 2017, physical editions of the game remain playable on current-gen consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X. Sadly, due to recent demand, prices for these physical copies have skyrocketed on the resale market!

Fans of Marvel greatly appreciate titles like Marvel Ultimate Alliance and Deadpool. It would be fantastic if these games make a comeback, particularly if they can run more smoothly on Xbox due to the platform’s enhancements for backward compatible games. Bringing back licensed games often comes with challenges, but there are signs that Xbox is considering reviving Activision’s back catalog; in fact, whispers about Activision’s Transformers games possibly receiving a similar treatment on Xbox have been circulating lately.

Currently, it’s uncertain whether these games will reappear exclusively on Xbox via the backwards compatibility feature or if they might be released more broadly across other platforms as well. Considering that several Xbox-published games have been made available on systems such as PS5 and Nintendo Switch this year, there is a chance for a broader release. For now, Marvel enthusiasts can only remain hopeful and patiently wait for any updates!
