Rob Liefeld, the inventor behind Deadpool, has announced he’s ending his relationship with Marvel due to how he was handled during the launch of Deadpool & Wolverine. In a recent episode of his podcast series Robservations, and later in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Liefeld explained his choice. During the premiere of Deadpool & Wolverine, he claims his family was not invited to the afterparty, and he also mentioned that Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige ignored him on the red carpet.
According to Liefeld on Robservations, they were intended to humiliate, undermine, and defeat him. He also mentioned that he had posed for professional photographs with the team behind Deadpool & Wolverine, but was later told by his publicist that those photos had been removed. Liefeld thinks the photos were taken as a polite gesture, despite the fact that pictures of Liefeld and his family ended up in Disney’s Getty image compilation.
After the release of the Deadpool & Wolverine movie in July, it was decided that further collaboration with Marvel would not continue. Liefeld stated, “Eventually, you realize, ‘I’ve gotten the message, and the message is clear.'” The mistreatment Liefeld experienced contrasts sharply with how he was treated during Fox’s releases of Deadpool and Deadpool 2. Liefeld revealed to THR that he participated in test screenings for both Deadpool films and even met with the Deadpool 2 marketing team. He explained, “They let me tag along, and I caused no drama. I was content to be there.”
During his podcast, Liefeld shared his perspective on Kevin Feige, saying, “In my personal experience, Kevin Feige hasn’t been kind to comic book creators.” Later, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he added, “I believe he could work on improving his relationship with comic writers and artists.
