Deadpool Creator Demands Kevin Feige’s Exit After MCU’s Box Office Blunders!

In a recent development, Rob Liefeld, the co-creator of Deadpool, has hinted at criticizing Kevin Feige again. This comes shortly after Liefeld ended all ties with Marvel following the release of Deadpool & Wolverine last summer and accused Feige, Marvel’s chief creative officer and president of Marvel Studios, of not valuing comic book creators. Now, Liefeld has implied that Feige should be temporarily removed from his duties on Captain America: Brave New World due to its underperformance at the box office.

Liefeld suggested on Twitter that they should remove Feige from his position, as he seems to have exhausted all possibilities, given that the movie experienced an 82% decline in its second week at the box office.

The Anthony Mackie and Harrison Ford-led Captain America sequel didn’t manage a home run, but it certainly wasn’t a strikeout either: after earning a strong $100 million during its opening weekend over Valentine’s Day/Presidents Day, it continued to dominate at the box office in its second week, securing the No. 1 spot, and has since grossed $141 million domestically and an additional $148 million internationally, bringing its estimated total worldwide earnings to around $289 million.

For thirty-five straight times, the Marvel Studios movies under Kevin Feige’s leadership, owned by Disney, have topped the domestic box office since Iron Man started the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2008. Over time, these 35 films have amassed a staggering $31.5 billion worldwide, making them the highest-grossing film franchise ever. Two of these films, Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019), even surpassed the $2 billion mark, while Feige has been responsible for producing eleven movies that earned more than a billion dollars each.

Prior to assuming the roles of president and producer at Marvel Studios when it was still an independent entity, Kevin Feige had previously served as an associate producer, and later moved up to co-producer or executive producer on Marvel comic book adaptations such as X-Men (2000), Spider-Man (2002), and Fantastic Four (2005).

Or, even more informally:

Before taking on the roles of president and producer at Marvel Studios during its independent days, Kevin Feige had already worked his way up from associate producer to co-producer or executive producer on various Marvel comic book adaptations like X-Men (2000), Spider-Man (2002), and Fantastic Four (2005).

In the second week of its release, “Brave New World” experienced a significant drop in box office earnings due to unfavorable critical reviews and a low CinemaScore grade (the poorest for any Marvel Cinematic Universe movie). This downward trend followed closely behind “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” which set a record for the largest drop over the same period in February 2023 with a decrease of 70%. The third installment of “Ant-Man” also received poor ratings on Rotten Tomatoes and CinemaScore. Later that year, the box office earnings for the “Captain Marvel” sequel, “The Marvels,” hit an all-time low for the franchise with an opening weekend of $46 million, followed by a 78% drop in its second week in November 2023. However, the following summer saw the Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman-led “Deadpool & Wolverine” film earn nearly $1.4 billion, breaking records as the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever made.

In a recent podcast episode, Rob Liefeld expressed his disappointment over not being invited to the afterparty following the New York premiere of the Deadpool & Wolverine movie, and feeling overlooked by Feige during the red carpet event. This was apparently the last straw for him.

Liefeld expressed that the intention behind the action was to humiliate, undermine, and ultimately defeat him. Disney played a significant role in this decision, stating bluntly that he and his family were not welcome at their premises anymore, even after initial screenings. Once he heard this, he realized it was time to move on. In essence, he had received the message loud and clear.

The podcast was released a few days before the publication of Deadpool Team-Up #5 on February 12th, which marked Liefeld’s final issue of Deadpool comics from Marvel Comics, with minimal promotion.
