Throughout the Deadpool Killogy, which includes the 2012 comic ‘Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe‘, its sequel ‘Deadpool: Killustrated’, and the trilogy finale ‘Deadpool Kills Deadpool’, Wade Wilson, also known as Deadpool, followed in the footsteps of a single predecessor by annihilating the entire Marvel Universe. Unlike Frank Castle, the Punisher, who carried out a similar task in Garth Ennis’ 1995 one-shot ‘The Punisher Kills the Marvel Universe’, Wade continued his rampage against even more Marvel characters in the five-issue series ‘Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe Again’, published in 2017.
Approximately ten years after their initial collaboration, authors Cullen Bunn and Dalibor Talajić joined forces once more to complete the climactic, five-issue finale of a cross-universe storyline. This tale ponders the hypothetical scenario: what if Deadpool eliminated the Marvel Universe for the last time?
This week’s issue #1 of “Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe One Last Time” delves back into the mind of the ‘Kills Again’ Deadpool, a character who was manipulated by an evil alliance of supervillains, headed by the Red Skull, to eliminate the heroes of the Marvel Universe. In this storyline, Deadpool is confronted by John Doe, also known as Nth Man the Ultimate Ninja – a lesser-known character from a Marvel comic written by Larry Hama and Ron Wagner. However, the deadly duo of gun and sword-wielding assassins meets its end at the hands of the ‘killer of worlds.’
Next, Deadpool encounters a puzzling young lady known as Alphea. She appears to be the daughter of Alfie O’Meagan, a childhood friend with psychic abilities, whom Doe once knew. “Alphie” dispatched the Nth Man to evaluate Deadpool, one of the remaining multiverse Deadpools, and subsequently enlists him for a crucial assignment.
Alphie gives Deadpool a tool for swiftly traveling across various realities in the multiverse, except for certain routes that are off-limits. He clarifies this because some paths are not intended for traversal. The device is linked to the multidimensional genetic data of his targets, all of whom potentially endanger every reality.
Deadpool’s kill list includes the following targets:
- Spider-Man
- Punisher
- Kraven the Hunter
- Daredevil
- Hulk (green one)
- Captain America
- Venom
- Black Panther
- Hellcat
- Union Jack
- Moon Knight
- Black Widow
- Speedball
- Wasp
- Ghost Rider
- X-Men (all of them)
- Hulk (red one)
- Thor
However, in an unexpected turn of events, the characters that Deadpool aims to eliminate are alternate variations of heroes he recognizes well. In this scenario, his first victim turns out to be the Superior Spider-Man – otherwise known as Otto Octavius, who took over Peter Parker’s body in this dimension. Deadpool affectionately refers to him as “Evil Spider-Man.” Amidst a fierce battle, he plants an explosive gadget on the Superior Spider-Man, ultimately detonating it and reducing him to fragments.
In his latest missions, Deadpool aims for characters like Frankenstein’s Monster version of the Punisher (as seen in Rick Remender’s ‘Punisher’ series), Ana Kravinoff, daughter of the late Kraven the Hunter (from the “Kraven’s First Hunt” storyline in ‘Amazing Spider-Man’), a demon-possessed Daredevil called The Beast (from ‘Shadowland’), and the gladiator-style Hulk, also known as World Breaker (from ‘World War Hulk’). Deadpool dismembers Frankenstein’s Monster Punisher, impales Ana Kravinoff, and stabs The Beast through the eye.
Prior to defeating the Hulk, who wrecked our heroes in retaliation for blasting him into space (as depicted in Planet Hulk), the World Breaker Hulk mysteriously disappears in a burst of white light. Next thing Deadpool knows, he’s been transported to another dimension, where Earth’s strongest heroes – Thor, Captain Marvel, Scarlet Witch, Vision, Black Panther, and Iron Man – are engaged in combat with the colossal alien Terminus, a destructive force known for obliterating entire worlds.
Alphie informs Deadpool that his fight with the Hulk has malfunctioned his reality-shifter, landing him in the primary Marvel Universe: Earth-616. She advises Deadpool, “This universe isn’t one you’ve listed. It’s not meant for destruction; instead, it needs to be protected.
The first installment of “Deadpool Eliminates the Marvel Multiverse Once and For All” is currently available for purchase from Marvel Comics, while issue number 2 arrives on shelves May 7th.
