As a seasoned gamer and Marvel enthusiast with a penchant for behind-the-scenes trivia, I must say, the intrigue surrounding Deadpool & Wolverine is nothing short of exhilarating! The fact that Chris Evans’ Human Torch involvement was kept under wraps despite the myriad set photo leaks only adds to the allure.
In today’s world of digital information, it’s becoming harder and harder to keep a movie’s plot under wraps, especially when it comes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Just like many other Marvel projects, Deadpool & Wolverine weren’t immune to set photo leaks that unveiled the comeback of certain multiverse characters from 20th Century Fox’s X-Men series. However, unlike these leaked surprises, the participation of Chris Evans as Human Torch managed to stay under wraps.
According to Aaron Stanford, who plays both Deadpool and Wolverine, it was purely chance that the paparazzi appeared at the right moment; otherwise, they might have unintentionally revealed much larger secrets.
In a unique interview for our Phase Zero podcast, Stanford explains that the entire scene was filmed in a vast, post-apocalyptic landscape reminiscent of Mad Max. Unfortunately, this location couldn’t be fully secured due to it being outside their control. As a result, paparazzi positioned themselves about half a mile away with powerful telephoto lenses and managed to capture the unauthorized photos, as they felt compelled to release these spoilers.
He explains, “I believe Chris wasn’t in that scene because it was filmed before and after the strike, so I worked on it the first day, and that was also when Chris was there. After the strike, we went away for however long it took to resolve the issue, and when we returned, we finished shooting the second part of that sequence. The paparazzi were present when we came back, but Chris wasn’t.”
