Deadpool & Wolverine: Ben Affleck’s Daredevil Was on a “70-Name Menu” of Marvel Cameos

Deadpool & Wolverine: Ben Affleck's Daredevil Was on a "70-Name Menu" of Marvel Cameos

As a long-time fan who has witnessed the highs and lows of Marvel Cinematic Universe, I must say that “Deadpool & Wolverine” has truly outdone itself! The cameos and guest appearances from across the multiverse were a delightful surprise, especially Jennifer Garner reprising her role as Elektra.

How can one eliminate a man without any fear? Off-screen. The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Deadpool & Wolverine boasts an array of appearances by characters from various dimensions: the Human Torch (Chris Evans), Gambit (Channing Tatum), X-23 (Dafne Keen), Blade (Wesley Snipes), and Elektra Natchios (Jennifer Garner), the sword-wielding assassin from the 2003 film Daredevil and its 2005 spinoff Elektra. T he’s unveiled as having perished prior to the movie’s events along with the Punisher, Quicksilver, and Magneto.

“Daredevil?” Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) exclaims, looking shocked. “I’m so sorry.” “It’s alright,” a calm Elektra replies, alluding to Affleck and Garner’s divorce. In a recent interview, director Shawn Levy disclosed that Garner consented to the joke, and Marvel Studios contemplated incorporating Affleck’s Daredevil into the film.

In the initial stages, as we perused an extensive list of 70 Marvel characters, Daredevil was indeed among them – a name that caught my eye. However, beyond those early discussions, and without any formal negotiations or proposals exchanged, Ben Affleck’s potential appearance as Daredevil never materialized. I shared this with Variety when asked about the possibility of him making a cameo.

Footage from movies produced by Fox, such as Daredevil, Elektra, Fantastic Four, and X-Men, is showcased in a montage set to Green Day’s music during the end credits. However, Ben Affleck’s involvement stops there. As Levy stated, “We reached out to every actor featured in the Fox tribute reel halfway through our end credits – that’s over 50 actors who have contributed to this franchise. It was enjoyable to create a heartfelt tribute to those years, those characters, and the actors who portrayed them.”

In the 2022 film “The Adam Project,” where Levy, the director, had Reynolds and Garner as his stars, he mentioned that the jokes about Garner’s and Hugh Jackman’s past divorces were intended playfully and with a friendly spirit.

Levy stated, “We always checked with people before making jokes involving them, whether it was written or spontaneous. For instance, the Daredevil joke and the one about Hugh Grant letting himself go after divorce were both approved by the performers. Ryan or I would ensure everyone felt comfortable and we weren’t mocking anyone unfairly. The humor was always light-hearted and agreed upon by everyone involved.”

In addition to established Marvel characters like Nicholas Cage’s Ghost Rider and the deceased X-Men, Marvel Studios has brought Deadpool and Wolverine to life on the big screen, with their film currently showing exclusively in theaters.
