Deadpool & Wolverine Concept Art Reveals Marvel Comics Universe Almost Appeared in Film

As a seasoned gamer and comic book enthusiast with over two decades under my belt, I can confidently say that the recent release of Deadpool & Wolverine has sent shockwaves through the Marvel Universe, and not just in the traditional sense! The multiverse-hopping antics of our favorite anti-heroes have always been a thrill to watch, but this time around, it seems Andy Park had a secret tribute up his sleeve – one that would make even the most hardcore fans go weak at the knees.

About a month ago, Deadpool and Wolverine hit the big screen, whisking Marvel enthusiasts on a thrilling journey through the expansive Marvel multiverse – almost. It turns out that there was an unexpected homage to Marvel Comics in the works, as revealed by Andy Park, Director of Visual Development at Marvel Studios, on Instagram. He shared an early piece of art he created for Deadpool & Wolverine, depicting a scenario where Wade Wilson (played by Ryan Reynolds) would have found himself in the actual comic universe of Marvel. In this imagined scene, each member of the original six MCU Avengers is portrayed in their unique artistic style that mirrors their most iconic comic book artists, such as Bob Layton’s Iron Man, Jack Kirby’s Captain America, and Sal Buscema’s Hulk. Although Park didn’t confirm specific references, fans have been guessing wildly about the potential influences behind these characters.

In my previous post, I paid tribute to my first boss and the creator of Deadpool, Rob Liefeld. For this post, I’ll share how I paid homage to numerous comic book legends during the pre-production phase of the Deadpool and Wolverine movie, before a script was even written. I proposed an exciting concept where Deadpool would leap through different universes and wind up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Each character in this universe would be portrayed in the unique art style of a legendary comic book artist who has significantly influenced me. Can you spot all these iconic artists/creators? This artwork, along with other pieces, will also appear in the upcoming The Art of Deadpool and Wolverine collection.

Will Deadpool and Wolverine Return in the MCU?

With their interdimensional storylines and blockbuster earnings, Deadpool and Wolverine have sparked speculation among fans about whether Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman will return to their roles in the future. Amidst the upcoming Avengers films like Doomsday and Secret Wars, this question has become even more relevant. In an interview with Variety before the release of Deadpool & Wolverine, they were coy about what their future on-screen appearances might be.

“I don’t know,” Reynolds answered. “Yeah, we’ll see. Yeah.”

Jackman remarked, “This is the first significant interview during our press tour, and I’m a bit unsure about how to respond.”

What Is Deadpool & Wolverine About?

In the Marvel Studios production titled “Deadpool & Wolverine,” Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine will rewrite the storyline of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The movie features Matthew Macfadyen playing Paradox, Emma Corrin as Cassandra Nova, and several returning cast members from previous Deadpool films, including Morena Baccarin as Vanessa Carlysle, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Karan Soni as Dopinder, Stefan Kapi?i? as Piotr Rasputin/Colossus, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Rob Delaney as Peter, and Lewis Tan as Shatterstar. Additionally, Aaron Stanford will reprise his role as Pyro from the X-Men film series, with speculation that Jennifer Garner may return as Elektra Natchios.

The filmmakers Kevin Feige, Ryan Reynolds, Shawn Levy, and Lauren Shuler Donner are the producers of this project, with Louis D’Esposito, Wendy Jacobson, Mary McLaglen, Josh McLaglen, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, George Dewey, and Simon Kinberg acting as executive producers.
